How can we improve ProtonMail?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Mailing Groups (listserv-style, like the old yahoo groups)

Introduce Mailing Groups, like the old Yahoo Groups or Google Groups. In other words, an administered Mailing list, that People can subscribe to, and an associated protonmail address that can be written to, and all users receive the E-Mail. No Need for all the shared storage and the other stuff, just a Mailing list.

Other Providers like Yahoo or Google require the members to have a Yahoo or Google account respectively, they are not provider-agnostic. ProtonMail could differentiate itself by allowing People from different E-Mail Providers to sign up to the Mailing Group.

    There could be i.e. a free Option…

      • Litecoin Payment

Please accept Litecoin as a payment method for premium accounts and donations. While Bitcoin is a great investment asset, for normal low level payments below multiple-thousand level, Litecoin is much better. Bitcoin transaction fees are already around $5. Currently Litecoin fees are around $0.05 or 5 cents. Even the advent of lightning networks on Bitcoin will not make Bitcoin cheaper since Litecoin will also have Lightning network payments and channel costs will be 100x more expensive on Bitcoin.

          • I would love to see "Canned Replies" like what Gmail has. This would be HUGE for business users.

It would be very nice to be able to save replies in the system to drop them in.

            • Reply without attachments by default

Currently when replying to an e-mail, any attachment received will get included again with the reply - unless it is manually removed - using up additional storage space. It would be helpful if the attachments either were not automatically added or if there was at least some way of turning this "feature" off.

              • Accept more crypto currencies.

Bitcoin is good for storage of value, but there are other good payment options. You would be way ahead of the curve if you accepted IOTA as a payment method. Payments would be free of charge and would take 15 seconds.

                • phishing email

a ability to report phishing emails, with all the needed information, headers, source code and the displayed massage.
the idea should filter the destination by the tld, .nl has a point en the icann has a other, essentially the court should be able to effectively delete the registration and arrest en prosecute the culprits.

the function checks the domain from front to back to check the governing organisation, there should be a no tld function & future blocking of non tld extensions.

                    • Allow use of TPM chips to self-encrypt nd manage keys

As above. Lots of computers these days have a TPM chip to self-generate and de/encrypt.

If ProtonMail allowed these to be compatible, we wouldn't need to rely on proton to do this and security would be much increased.

                      • rotating keys

The secret key is only decrypted by javascript in client's web browser. However it's also possible that client's browser & computer is not safe so the decrypted key can be lost.

                        It's better to allow:
                        1. Manually switch encryption key: A button that user can simply click to get a new key and re-encrypt all the emails with the new key, after the user feels he previously log in from some where unsafe.

                        2. Auto key rotating: After a period of time, such as 3 months, system automatically generate a new key when user log in.

                        • Do not auto delete expired message

Currently the expired messages are also automatically deleted from user's 'sent' mailbox, which is not necessary and could stop a lot of customers consider using your services, such as medical industry, where history record is required by law to be kept for years.

Most of the time, nobody wants to delete sent emails from their box. If anybody wants, he/she can always manually delete.

Please don't auto delete expired message.

                            • Organically grow buttons with use

Right now (in website view) the top buttons are all the same size, but undoubtedly (unless using keyboard shortcuts) some buttons get used more than others, so why are they all the same size - I don't want to accidentally hit send to trash when I meant to archive.

Machine learning should figure out how often you use a button and make it easier to click on by making it wider.

                                • BLOCK SENDER FEATURE IS LACKING BUT ESSENTIAL FOR INCREASED PERSONAL SECURITY

What more do I need to say? Practically all other mainstream clients use this feature. If an email address is being used to spam me, a simple block feature would save data, processing power and personal online security.
For a system which aims to be the absolute best of all hosted emails from a security point of view, it is surprising that this option has not been included. I would hope to see it in future editions! :)

                                    • Warn when sending to insecure email addresses

I primarily use protonmail for secure communication among business partners that are also on protonmail. (some with custom domains)

I occasionally accidentally send a message to a non-protonmail recipient without knowing it. I would like to avoid doing that, is there a way to either

                                      1) prevent email to any outside addresses
                                      or
                                      2) warn me before i send an email to an non-protonmail address

                                      thanks

                                      • "Insert Link" option default entry to "Link or Email" field

Presently, when text is highlighted and the "Insert Link" option is clicked, a window waiting for the link to be pasted into opens, but defaults the cursor to the "Text to display" field, which is already populated by the highlighted text and likely not needed to be changed.

It would make more sense (GMail does this) to automatically default the cursor to the "Link or Email" field where the link is to be pasted, if the operation was enacted when text was highlighted i.e. the "Text to display" field would already be populated.
