Proton Chat - Messaging app
Let's make it in some math style:
ProtonMail : Gmail = ProtonChat : Hangouts
:)
Secure private chat same principle of secure email, but applied to chats.

I suggest using the Signal protocol for Proton Chat.
Unlike Signal, ProtonChat could use their own servers rather than rely on AWS, and I think the ability to sign up to Proton without a phone number is a major plus and a major cost save since there are no SMS registration fees. -

Developing Proton Chat with the Matrix standard would be incredible.

I personally would LOVE a Proton Messenger app! Trust is so important these days and over the use of using Proton apps for many years now, that trust in Proton is 10/10. A messenger app of some sort would certainly fill a gap. At the very least, have Proton evaluate alternatives.
My perspective?
Whatsapp - Don't like it as it is owned by Meta and I don't trust Meta. They are also collecting a lot of data about its users.
Telegram - They hold encryption keys on their servers which means someone could decrypt your messages. So no, don't trust them either.
Signal - Data collection (what is is used for?) Have to use your phone number.I also have it on good authority from law enforcement agencies regarding the aforementioned messaging apps. What I heard does not give me any confidence in them and so I use them sparingly.

I think whatapps fm at https://modilimitado.io/pt/fm-whatsapp-apk is also a good alternative

You may be right (chad) but the reality is that Threema, Signal, Session, Simplex, TOX, are not applications that I know have an impact, I assure you that there are people in everyday life who do not know what atox or tox is,
And proton has no comparison with Microsoft, Google, Apple, meta, which create monopolies and sell your information, I prefer to pay proton.me and that is still more robust and create a secure ecosystem and complete the private is priceless. -

My guess is that Proton is waiting the EU to impose interoperability of messaging apps, means you would be able use any app you want independently of the one used by your contacts.

No thanks, this is already addressed by the likes of Threema, Signal, Session, Simplex, TOX, etc.
We don't need another ecosystem and especially not another walled garden (do you really want another anti-competitive entity like Microsoft, Google, Apple, etc?).
It would be a waste of Proton's time and resources, which should be focused on making their existing products (really, it can be argued that they have already become quite bloated) complete and functional.

would really like to see this supporting mesh (BT p2p) for offline (especially with existing contacts), as well as voice/video calling - currently I like Telegram and we use it as a family but being able to switch to a more secure, single, messaging platform (especially if users can be me@mycustomdomain.com) would be a great feature

This is needed.. I think proton would do a good job at this. Why hasn't it come out.. Says planned since 2016... I would love to have my messaging app to be apart of my every thing else..

would love to be able to replace Telegram/Signal/Discord with one secure solution that also integrates contacts with Mail/Calendar etc and is less full of the spam and web3 pyramid schemes that plague telegram and discord
