Proton Photos
basically Google photos, but better because it's encrypted.
As in, a mobile app for backing up and organizing phone photos.
Maybe we could pay a monthly fee for access to Photos, Drive, and VPN service. I'd much rather support an independent company than Google

Hi everyone,
The Proton Drive photo backup for Android and iOS is already out.
Please see the announcements for:
iOS: https://proton.me/blog/proton-drive-photo-backup-ios
Android: https://proton.me/blog/proton-drive-photo-backup-android
We'll continue working on developing more functionalities to help you protect your most precious memories. Thanks for your continuous support!

I have thousands and thousands of photos on my mac that I'd love to be able to share with family, but never trusted any of the platforms out there. Since you are such a secure platform, this is the first time I'd consider sharing.
From a features perspective:
1. All of my photos are currently organized into event folders that have dates, location and event name.
2. Each photo is tagged with people names.
3. Provide capability for invited users to search based on date, event, location, person. Also, I'd be happy to beta test this!

For my friends and family who go on trips together all the time and need a place to upload photos afterwards, Google Photos is the go-to solution. I would love to replace it with Proton Photos.
There are a few things which keep Google Photos sticky IMO:
- We assume everybody in the group already has a Google account so uploads are frictionless
- We like to get together after the trip and view the slideshow on a large TV together and Google Photos has a really nice interface for going through an album with several hundred photos
- Sharing, commenting, and liking of specific photos within an albumThe biggest challenge to Proton Photos adoption by groups of families and friends is the requirement that people need Proton accounts to upload the photos in the first place. People I'm trying to convert don't want to go through the process of signing up when they already have an inbox (Google) they are happy with. If Proton can provide a low-commitment, pleasing user experience to non-registered users, these people are much more likely to create an account in the future.
From a cryptographic standpoint, can we think of clever ways for Proton Photos to be engaging to people without Proton accounts? The ability to preview password-protected albums before downloading is one great example of this and it was announced as an upcoming feature on /r/protondrive last week.

This idea is also posted here: https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/945460-general-ideas/suggestions/16564432-proton-photos
That's almost 400 votes and would land at #11 on the top General ideas, or #6 for Drive ideas.
Agree with most other users, a replacement for Google Photos would be very welcomed. Proton Photos would have to deliver a mobile app, categories/directories (parent-level) and albums (child-level), sharing albums (add/remove members at the album or directory level), group share (ability for only album members to upload; or public link to upload). Include ability to add tags, filter by tag, and search by tag.

This is a fantastic idea! The Photos would obviously store in Drive but having an app to back them up from the phone and view them organized by date and location (based on EXIF data) would be amazing. I think this could even *potentially* be monetized as a paid app (ie you have storage with your plan but if you want the Photos app, you pay a fixed one-time fee in the app store for these extra features).

This would be a great new product to have in your portfolio to compete with other vendors

I wish it were easier to use Protondrive to share password protected photos with people without Proton accounts.
If image previews were added to the folder share today, then my friends and family would see how convenient and user-friendly Proton Drive is, and they would all want to sign up.

Proton Photos would be perfect. Also, I am willing to pay for storage but I do not want Proton Unlimited Plan. That plan has fancy emails and other things that I don't need. I just want to have Proton Drive with enough storage to put all my photos and documents into. If there was a plan that JUST was storage, then I would pay for that but the price is too expensive for what I need. I am sure it would not be terribly hard to compete with Google One's prices, https://one.google.com/about/plans. Hope that comment is helpful. Very grateful for Proton!

In today's police state society, where all of our photos are taken from social media and other tech giants like Google and used against us for facial recognition services across the globe, we need a safe & secure way to store, view, share with friends & family, and even edit our photos. These days, even Adobe REQUIRES us to store our photos in adobe cloud, just to be able to edit them. They ALL want unrestricted access to our photos, which should be both personal and private, unless we choose otherwise! You guys have the power to help society make this change, to keep our photos safe, just like you do our email and drive storage data. Give us a photo app, for pc & phones, that will allow us to do away with the greedy tech giants! PLEASE! Thank you for caring about our privacy and making such wonderful products to protect us!

maybe think about acquiring ente.io since you bought simplelogin.
As long as we use our protondrive storage and we can buy more.

I would prefer to use Proton for auto backup of photos and videos instead of using Google photos. Any chance of this happening in the future?

Given recent revelations that Apple maintains encryption keys for all user iCloud data and will actively be scanning all photo uploads to iCloud there is a tremendous opportunity for a successful photo app that would sync with iPhoto to upload photos to the Proton environment; allowing users to shut off iPhoto syncing with the cloud on their phones.

I'm currently looking into other solutions for Google Photos but like it to exist within the Proton Environment if possible

This is definitely something I am happy to pay for!
I really hope Proton can get their different apps interacting with each other well on Android AND interacting/syncing with phone functionality like contacts/calendar etc.
Already on Plus tier!
