"Accounts that are inactive for over 3 months may be automatically deleted."
Please consider altering that policy. Three months is way too short a time!
Why not 1-2 or more years instead of 3 months?
As of early 2022, the 3 month period was extended to 12 months. For full details, please visit: https://proton.me/support/inactive-accounts
Please note this policy only applies to free accounts (paid plans are exempt) and logging in once a year will ensure that your account remains active.

There are a few good and a few bad comments here. The point is, three months is a very short period of time before shutting down an account. I personally check my account often enough that it shouldn't matter, but I too can be affected by unusual life circumstances that create a situation where my account is deleted... I don't want to be rude but whoever thought of the three month limit is just trying to force users to go paid. I will donate before I would pay for a monthly email account. The only reason I'm here is because I do not trust other providers and I'm trying you guys out. To be completely honest, I won't donate until I see Proton mail in a lawsuit where they absolutely refuse to give up information or stand to their word that they literally can't give anything out other than encrypted information.
One year should be the absolute minimum before shutting an account down. It just looks bad on you guys. Realistically, there is no reason for this other than wanting people to sign up for the paid account. As stated before and most likely doesn't need to be stated at all. Storage is exceptionally cheap, that is not the reason for this decision.

I totally agree, 1-2 years would be a lot fairer.

I'd hate to lose my emails because unexpected circumstances prevent me from accessing my account for 3 months. It's not very likely to happen but it can. I'd feel better knowing my emails are secure for at least a year. And I think this is something ProtonMail needs to do if they want to be taken as a serious email provider. Currently the only thing they offer over the competition is encryption and not much else.

I think they should be archived, for access later by the person, if they so reappear.

3 months is really terrible.

Yes, this is terrible
I heard the comment of Anonymous (on July 15, 2017 08:47), and I think this is a great idea to give warning before deleting but 3 month is still way too short...For the comment of : Kabraxis, I think he is not really smart, this is a technical problem
>A free account blocks space on the HDD.
Yes and no, inactive user do not use bandwidth, nor RAM or CPU you should rationalize, ONLY disk space !
disk space is cheap, you can buy big HDD, mutualise or compress mail before encrypting them
How come a lots of service out there offer free space etc>So it costs. Not one account, but 308759326 will do.
ok cool, but are you aware that ProtonMail officially state that they have only 2.000.000 users ?
And we are not asking lifetime...When I see post of people like Kabraxis, I'm always wondering if this is a bot, someone from NSA trolling rational people or someone not smart
with this sort of comment Kabraxis you are wasting diskspace and my precious time like an inactive user and you should switch to "paied account" AHAH.I think this would be very possible to put the limit toward 1 year, more the better lol
NSA store our data lifetime seriously you should be able to do something...don't try to fool us with the excuse of the money !
Thank you

i signed up believing that this was an account for life. It indeed was when I last looked at the rules. I did quite a bit of research before signing up. However they changed the rules. I think this is just to try to get rid of the free members. I doubt that they would shut someone down if their payments were up to date. I think the free accounts are just to lure us in. Then they don't want us anymore. This email service has already gone way down in my estimation as a result of this and I have no visions of it always being there for me, and will plan accordingly.
Even if enough complaints get them to change the rules it will take a lot to win my confidence back. They are not the only email provider out there, and more competitive ones will be springing up in the future.
They place so much emphasis on security, but the security of knowing that you have an email address that will always be there is denied us.
Although I do regular e-mailing, it is also very sparse and so I cannot justify paying for a premium account. -

Sending a warning to the alternate address is a no brainier isn't it?
I'm waiting for more features before paying. If I get deleted I'll never subscribe and will have bad things to say about my experience. Think about it.

I understand the reasoning behind the policy. However, would it be possible to extend it to 6 months? Some ProtonMail users may travel/work in areas that limit internet connectivity for extended periods of time.

Why not send warnings to those who have provided alternative addresses, or even SMS warnings giving 4 weeks warning, that accounts are due to be deleted - ? - This, to me, seems to be a better idea, and would at least mean that those intending to use their accounts, or who have not checked for mail recently, would have some warning and would not need to worry about losing any mail.

To me it's obvious:
- A free account blocks space on the HDD.
- So it costs. Not one account, but 308759326 will do.
- If you ask me, the goal here is not to have as much as possible free2use customers. They need money to run the system and all. So if you like to keep your account I guess a paied account is the way to go -

I like the 1 year idea. Sometimes I have gone over 3 months without needing to log in to an email account. Sucks losing all your saved emails
