make protonmail faster
Search is slow
Deleting multiple (15+) emails is slow
Emptying the trash is slow
This service is so slow that I'd rather just let the NSA read my email

If Proton is serious about being a fully fledged email service, they need to drastically improve the speed. It's woeful.

I'm using a PWA app, and I don't understand why it's so slow? Each press is followed by a few seconds of waiting, during which the user remains unaware of whether they have pressed an interface element, or whether they need to press it again, whether the delay is caused by local network access issues, or a problem on the service side, whether the problem is temporary and affects them personally, or whether it is general and permanent, and the user simply needs to wait for the service administration to acknowledge it and resolve it.

Opening Proton is SLOW. Clicking on an already downloaded email is SLOW. Downloading email is SLOW. Clicking on new message is SLOW. Typing in a new message is SLOW. I am not a fast typist but I have to slow down for Proton to catch up after typing in only a handful of letters or it just skips over letters and I have to back up and add them back in.
Opening settings is SLOW. EVERYTHING about PROTON is slow. Both the web app and the desk top app are SLOW. This happens on my antiques machines as well as my up to date business machines. I checked Task Mgr the other day and Proton had 32 processes running and I was not even working with Proton. Something needs to be fixed and soon. -

Question could have been phrased better (I think fairly obvious there's some humor to it), but the fan-boy swarm here is discouraging.
If the community really cares about E2EE adoption, then gaslighting users about performance is counter-productive. Can confirm the experience on both desktop macOS and Android is going to be prohibitively slow for mass adoption (which, if it brings paid subscribers, would be helping the Proton project).
It is telling that a search through the docs and support for "cache" and "caching" produces no results other than copy/paste instructions for clearing browser cache (which, for PWA installs, should A) be irrelevant because the service-worker should be using isolated cache storage, and B) therefore if anything actually be counter-productive, because in a single-use PWA you WANT the cache to speed up loading).
Netflix et al DRM media platforms are streaming you encrypted video data in real-time, which is your first clue all the hand-waving about encryption in these threads is likely not from cryptographers.
The speed is a legitimate concern for usability. Caching seems the obvious first point of discussion. Either make at least some configuration editable by the user, or beef up the documentation to explain the blocker.
FR should be taken more seriously.

Hello,
Proton Mail is always going to be slow because of the requirement to encrypt and find data using the cryptographic keys.
Apologies.

proton drive is VERY slow and needs more viewing options for backed up photos instead of being stuck with the 3 row grid on mobile

To improve actions like deleting, accepting invitations, etc., you could implement "optimistic response" pattern. It seems to me that a lot of time is used because the UI waits for a server response and then updates it. If you instead optimistically update the UI and roll it back in case of an error (Which should be quite rare), the UI becomes quite snappy.

I think security is the priority for Proton and therefore it really can be slow. As long as it is secure I opt for increasing speed.

Agreed that this is probably the most critical issue. The Android app takes close to a minute to load any email, basically rendering it useless. The only good thing is that you can quickly action emails from the notifications.

I agree it's the main issue with proton services (and it's a very discouraging one for those who want to fully quit gmail &co)

I am TRYING to get a time sensitive email - it comes in daily and the service is so slow it arrives 15 to 20 minutes after I get the text confirmation that it's been sent. What gives with this!!!

Yes, I believe that will indeed be the reaction of the public in the long run. When one signs up for Proton Mail, the web page fails to disclose honestly that it takes more than 100 times to receive an e-mail than it takes other e-mail suppliers, perhaps 1000 times if a photo is involved. These numbers are not exaggeration!
Yes, in exchange for security, we must endure massive delays.
The delays, plus the sign-up-page dishonesty and the consequent feeling in customers of having been cheated or lied to (lie of omission), will eventually cause the company to fail. Unless they cure this problem, they will have no job in two years, I am certain.

On web interface, navigating between messages and folders is not slow, though it's not instant. This makes navigation slower overall. Gmail is faster.
At least, navigating between messages in same folder & thread should be instant.
This would be my main complaint about Protonmail.
I'm using Firefox but in Chrome, there isn't much difference.
