I second this. The official Proton Mail Android app currently depends on Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) for push notifications. This means real-time banner and lock-screen notifications only work if Google Play Services is installed.
On GrapheneOS and other de-Googled devices (where many users install the official APK via Obtainium and deliberately avoid Google services), notifications do not work at all, even though the app itself functions normally.
Please consider adding support for UnifiedPush (the current open standard used by many privacy-focused apps), and/or a native IMAP IDLE / direct connection fallback that posts standard Android notifications without any Google dependency.
This would make the official Proton apps fully usable for privacy-conscious users who choose GrapheneOS and similar platforms. Happy to test any beta builds.
