I can't believe this feature request does not have more votes !
Efficient search is a basic need for any modern mail system, since Google / Gmail introduced the "search instead of classify" spirit. There are technocal ways of providing search without breaking privacy, with new zero-konwledge algorithms.

Agreed. We need to be able to enter a keyword and have ProtonMail search the subjectA, contacts AND body of messages for that word. Otherwise the search is completely useless. Every other *free* email platform has this function.

Dear Protonmail - what is the status of this much needed feature?
You have tagged it as planned in 2015 - but we heard nothing ever since (beside that we can use the bridge which is not an option in my case)... -

YES!! keep up with other competitors- need to search text words as well as heading and username

If I have search based on some data part of email, search feature doesnt search/match but it looks for subjects only. If you compare with Gmail, it search email contents too.

Easily the most vital feature missing for business use. The only reason this has so few votes is due to the fact that proton mail brings up voting to brand new users and EVERYONE assumes Proton Mail has at least basic search functionality. What it does have is quite a bit less than basic search functionality. I really appreciate all the hard work, but I have to say that it is ridiculous this isn't already a thing and that it has to be voted on. I also don't feel like "it's hard" or "because security" are excuses here. At least give us an "insecure" way (with lots of warnings about how stupid we are for using the feature) until this is resolved. If I could, I would put all of my votes on this.

My support to all the comments that say that the search in email content is an _essential_ feature.
As many users, I will not upgrade until this is functional. -

tagged as "planned" in 2015. Please PM team, get to it!! tutanota already did it in 2017!

I agree with all the comments. Can't understand why this isn't a standard feature. Currently a free customer and the limited search functionality is the primary reason I don't upgrade.

It's clear there are ways to create a search for the user of encrypted email. Anybody at Protonmail care to confess how the lack of that feature is INTENTIONAL and designed to inconvenience people back to Google?

This is a feature I've had in the past with other mail systems and I REALLY miss it. It is becoming a big productivity problem for me when I have to research issues. I have to remember who sent something or what the subject line was and after a few months (days!) that is almost impossible. Please consider it! Thank you!!!

Full text search is a must-have feature. Tutanota can do it; why can't you?

This really needs to be built, other providers (e.g tutanota) can do it, why can't ProtonMail? It's crazy to be lacking this ability in 2020!

Any updates here since 5 years :( ?

Can I suggest this gets implemented by building a fulltext index client side when the messages are decryptable, and storing that index using the same encryption keys as the messages themselves.
This will mean the index is protected with the same measures as the mail itself, but we can still use full body search client side.

The documentation says 'search on the message body cannot be implemented because these are encrypted except on the user's machine'.
This is clear - you cannot do server-side message body search. And you should not be able to.
otoh, message body search is absolutely required.
So, how to make this possible?
Fairly simple, really. If a user wants to do client-side search, they need a local download of all emails they want to be able to search the body of. You are now offering the export app - this makes it possible to implement message body search.
Please do so as a priority - it is a real bar to me recommending the service to others. -

I need to search all my emails for a person, a subject, a term, why can't i do that? why? why? why? Why is this such a difficult thing for you to do? why? why? why? that seems like such a simple thing to ask for a sophisticated system and email such as this. I am entirely disappointed when I can't remember who sent me what on what subject over hundreds of emails and years of emails. I NEED TO FIND THINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!111

To be able to search the mail body within web client or mobile app is a MUST feature IMHO. I honestly cannot understand why this feature gets so little attention comparing to such nonsense things as "Dark Mode".

Searching does only include Name an Email. No Organisation can be searched. There should be a possibility to search in all fields of contacts and Emails.
