Allow unread emails in custom folders to still show up as notifications in iOS
First, I have multiple aliases set up and have set up filters to redirect emails to each alias into different folders. The problem is, that since those emails are redirected to folders and no longer reside in my inbox, the notification icon on the app listing the number of new, unread emails no longer displays at all. I still get banner notifications, but I would much rather have a simple red circle notification displaying the number of unread email, regardless of whether it is in another folder.
The second part... I know some people deliberately filter out junk email into specific folders an might not want to receive notification about them. The solution... how about a simple toggle/option on each of the custom folders. If the toggle is active, any unread email in that folder will contribute to the total number of unread email displayed on the app icon. If the option is toggled off, unread email within the folder will not contribute to the total unread count on the app icon.
This allows users to still receive an immediate visual indication of the total number of unread email without having to open the app, saving server bandwith & cost for Proton and valuable time for users.
This also allows users to set up junk mail filters & folders and disable visual notifications for them so it's less distracting. Again, this saves Proton server bandwidth and money, and saves users from having to waste time looking at junk mail or manually opening the app.
Finally, for those who are bombarded with email and don't want the constant visual reminder of how many unread email are piling up in their inbox or other folder, they can simple toggle the number notification off entirely for any/all folders and check the app only when needed.
In summary, it saves Proton money. It saves me time and provides more timely notification of emails within custom folders. Seems like a win/win.
