Flag & Checkmark
Can you add a Flag and Read Checkmark on emails? If you read an email but need to follow up, you can flag it. Once it's resolved you can click the flag to turn into a checkmark. Also add sorting by flagged emails.

Flags are very useful to mark the status of processing the message. Or also as important, not important, etc.
