Android's Calendar API integration
Android's Calendar API should be incorporated into Proton Calendar, because without that it lacks some fundamental features.
First, if you click a calendar event link, there is no option to open it in Proton Calendar, since it doesn't plug into that intent.
Second, widgets and great launchers (like Niagara) do not see Proton as a calendar, so its events can not be shown. Proton's calendar widget is nice, but it would be much better to have total freedom about launchers and widgets integrate.

Currently I self host a Nextcloud instance whose only remaining job is to sync my calendar and contacts across devices. I would love to retire it and fully use Proton, but since it doesn't integrate with anything I cant.
On Android I have widgets that require access to my appointments and am looking into buying a smartwatch, neither of which can work with Proton as it stands right now. -

I'm using a 3rd party calendar widget, in large parts because the Proton Calendar widget is extremely basic and can't be configured in any meaningful way. Either give me a good set of options to customise your own widget, or make it so my 3rd party Calendar widget actually recognises it.

I already ran into the issues others have talked about, like Niagara launcher, but with Pebble supposedly coming back with new hardware, I would definitely like to be able to view my agenda and merge with like my work calendar on teams, on my Pebble. Thus me searching out this issue.

Exactly. With Proton calendar operating in it's own little bubble it's not a calendar from Android's point of view. I'm using a very minimalist, transparent widget to show my appointments for the day, but that cannot access the Proton calendar.
Also, Android has the feature to turn to DND mode during events from a given calendar, which saves you from embarrassment during meetings, classes, ... This also can only work if Proton functions as an actual Android calendar.

Without this, calendar events won't show up on Wear OS smartwatches (watch face complications, agenda views).
