Gmail connection — option to disable forwarding while keeping send-as, or exclude messages forwarded from Proton
The new Easy Switch Gmail connection (May 2026) bundles two features together: forwarding all incoming Gmail into Proton, and the ability to send/reply from the Gmail address inside Proton Mail. Please make these independently toggleable, or let the forwarding skip certain messages.
My use case: Proton is my primary mailbox, and I keep a Gmail account as a searchable backup archive. A Proton filter forwards everything I recieve that's not from my own gmail to my Gmail. I like the new feature to be able to reply from the Gmail address without leaving Proton.
The problem: the Gmail connection's forwarding seems all-or-nothing, so it immediately forwards the messages my Proton filter just sent over — bouncing them back and creating a duplicate of every single email in my Proton inbox. Gmail-side filters don't seem to prevent this (skip-inbox/labels have no effect on what the connection forwards)
Best I can figure out right now my only options are: live with a duplicate of every email, or disconnect Gmail entirely and lose send-as.
Suggested fixes (any one would solve it):
1. Separate toggles for the connection's components: forwarding on/off, send-as on/off.
2. An exclusion rule on the connection's forwarding (e.g., skip messages already forwarded from this Proton account — they're identifiable via the X-Pm-Forwarded-From header)
This would help anyone doing a gradual migration who still mirrors mail back to Gmail for search, compliance, or backup reasons — not just my setup.
