I don't fully understand Markdown myself, but if JonthueM's idea at least includes the option of having a "source edit" feature in the compose editor, I'm all for it! I'd like to be able to compose my email in my Markdown text editor and then "copy as html" and paste it into a source edit window, so that it would then be rendered properly as html.
Of course, if the editor were to be able to render Markdown code immediately, that's good, too! :-)
