Most recent emails at the top of thread, not bottom. I've already missed several because it goes to the oldest mail in the thread.

There's no setting for this. Other emails give most recent at the top.
Also, having my name on a thread when I have replied to someone is confusing. I didn't send the received message, my contact did, but I can't see who it was on threads of similar names.
I'm finding the inbox rather clunky.
I'd like to be a long term user of protonmail, but you need to improve its functionality before I'd do that.

The standard setting with all other email services I am useing is for the most recent messages to be shown at the top of a chain. Without an option to set this same behavour in Proton inbox and sent folders the service is not useable for my purposes.

The only thing I can think of is that this was done purposely and maliciously. Maybe they're trying to cut their user base down? Regardless, it's horrible, stupid, and ignorant.

In the case where a user has a long thread of emails (e.g. they get a monthly email over and over, and archive those emails instead of deleting them) it doesnt take very many messages before the thread becomes difficult to navigate.
Primarily, this is caused by the fact that each new email in a thread is shown at the BOTTOM of the thread (after all the previously received and read emails) instead of the TOP.
This results in a lot of pointless scrolling to get past all the messages the user has already processed in order to view the new one at the bottom of the list, which is has a high probability of being off the bottom of the screen. Every single time a new one arrives. Over and over.

Yes Newest email top and it's coherent with the Inbox sorting.
Users should have the Peference.

Agree. The long list of old messages from the sender at the top of the email pane, is wasted space even though it automatically scrolls. Would like the option to put this at the bottom.
