Support UnifiedPush for android notifications
I don't have google services on my phone and having every app permanently connected checking for new messages is detrimental to battery life. UnifiedPush is the open alternative to Google Cloud Messaging: https://unifiedpush.org

Technical side first, at the moment you will still need google play services to have proton mail to be able to have push notifications / FCM.
Irony in this, is that calyxos, e/os and whichever other android ROM uses microG to get push notifications / FCM working crashes. Like the event in which protonmail will just force close itself.GrapheneOS does talk to an isolated google play services, still this is google here as dependency.
This maybe the most efficient way to do it. But for most users under this "feature" they are trying to get away from having Google as a dependency.
Seeing that UnifiedPush would be a alternative. This should be built right into protonmail
Question for the moment: on the short term, is efficiency preferable?
or like many others here: in the long run, should the dependency on google play services push notifications be having an alternative like UnifiedPush for alternative ROM's?answer to the question, also answers in which way proton would still be dependent on Google play services / FCM or not.

I know this is a long comment, but after nearly 3 years...

I don't know how much work that would be for proton but this is really a needed feature

This would be great for Graphene OS users!
I moved to Graphene to de-Google. Hence I don't want to be forced to have Google Play Services running in the background on my device.
I have downloaded Proton Pass, Authenticator and VPN från F-droid, and I guess I could download the Proton Mail apk from Proton's website, but without UnifiedPush it will not be able to deliver push notifications which I think is an important feature for a mail app.

I manage to live without notifications, but this is a really needed feature

Considering Proton collaborates with the GrapheneOS project, it seems kind of strange that Proton is choosing to overlook this. Notifications on stock GrapheneOS still don't work.

Its really kooky that Proton doesnt have this yet? Why do we have Proton when were trying to degoogle? Its so silly. Is the task enormous to achieve this? Or is it doable but will break the bank? Please, allow us to have this!

This is critical, we need it, and I can't emphasize enough how important this feature is. I'm running GrapheneOS without Google services, and not being able to receive notifications for my emails is crazy and completely detrimental. Please prioritize UnifiedPush!

As google spreads like wildfire into every part of the world and Proton offers some limited security and privacy the presence of FCM (google firebase) in the ProtonMail app code sems somewhat lazy - sorry! We know that IP and anything else available is grabbed by google so please push this on to the development decks to build on Unified Push if at all possible !!

I think this is a really important feature, as the App does not check for notifications itself like some other Mail Apps (e.g.: Thunderbird), even when Battery optimizations are explicitly disabled. Depending on Apps of the company you're trying to replace is not a good idea

I gradually move from Google Play Store to fdroid and lack of Protonmail there is a great miss. I assume unified push is one of the pieces needed for Proton Mail to appear there so I go e a huge vote for this

I won't be whiny about it like most others; i'll just say it would be great and makes a lot of sense!

Can you please hurry up this development process? It's getting ridiculous after all these years

If you cant or don't want to develope your own push notification system, please at least implement Unified Push, so that who cant or don't want to use Google has a working alternative.

While push notifications work with microG on degoogled phones, with UnifiedPush it would be great to have a solution for a phone that doesn't have/need microG.

This is the #1 thing the entire proton ecosystem needs..... And it's been over 2 years since this post. Even native polling for notifications would be an extreme upgrade. Calendar has it. Why not mail?

And another issue open for over 2 years that prevents people from degoogling even though Proton so often advertises as an alternative to google - the irony is dead apparently.
Imagine being so against google but then requiring google play services for notifications to work... only with Proton.

I would have this too for all Proton Apps. Proton stands for privacy and should do this also in their Apps.
UnifiedPush can also fall back to Firebase.

Please, add notification support on degoogled profile. Thanks
