Why can't labels and folders have the same name?
Folders and labels have a different function and are stored separately. I might want to label emails and use a folder with the same name for the respective functionalities. It doesn't seem logical that they can't have the same name.
It's clear that I can add e.g. a prefix to one of these, but it's messy.

They are definitely treated as different sets of metadate. In the guide by Proton, the labels are described as tags, and nowhere is it mentioned that they are technically the same as folders. The featuresets are also different. This should not be a problem. Just make it two different metadata entries.

Example: I have a “newsletter” folder. I want all the newsletters to also have the label “newsletter,” but it is not possible to give the label the same name as the folder, so I had to, for instance, name the label “newsletters” (with an s) instead. It would be cool if this feature could be changed so that both is possible.

Because technically folders are labels too.
