Please enable notifications on android through websocket or Sunup. Proton markets itself as a privacy consious provider. I don't think it's appropriate or acceptable to rely on Google Play Services (UnifiedPush / FCM) as the sole or mandatory method for push notifications on Android.

By forcing users to rely on Google’s infrastructure to get timely email and calendar alerts, privacy-minded users who run de-Googled devices (like GrapheneOS, CalyxOS, or LineageOS without microG) are left with a subpar experience. They are either forced to disable push notifications entirely and rely on battery-draining polling, or compromise their threat model by connecting to Google’s servers.

Proton’s mission is to provide an ecosystem free from tech giant surveillance. Supporting self-hosted push standards like UnifiedPush (via Gotify or Ntfy) or maintaining a direct, energy-efficient WebSocket connection directly aligns with that promise. Giving users native control over their push delivery mechanism would eliminate the dependency on Google, uphold user sovereignty, and set a standard for true privacy on Android.

Please consider adding alternative push notification protocols to the Proton Android app ecosystem.
