Emoticons
A basic set of Emoticons would be great.

Given how essential emojis are in modern communication, even work-related chat and email, I'm really hoping for ProtonMail to implement emoji support that works as well as possible with common best practices employed by mainstream chat/email platforms.
I'm migrating to ProtonMail from Gmail (will upgrade to a paid account after a month of testing the free version) and what I love about ProtonMail over other Gmail competitors (Posteo, etc.) is its wonderful UX/UI design.
Nowadays emoji support has become a rather core aspect of UX in any chat/communication tool, so I'm hoping ProtonMail will catch up in this regard as well. -

Emoticons are something old, some email systems send images attached to support them. I think a better idea is to replace unicode characters with Emojis, like most services of instant messaging and similar (WhatsApp, Telegram, Twitter, Facebook, etc).
I have had to receive unicode characters in ProtonMail and are very difficult to distinguish (depending of the font).

In all kinds of digitial communication, emoji are an important part.
They are everywhere!. It is also a shortcoming that only receive unicode characters, when from other services I can be viewed Emojis.
It would be very cool to ProtonMail support emojis, especially using EmojiOne.

A toolbar for auto-placing the Unicode emojis into the field of an email in a similar vein to Gmail.
