Plain text
Send Plain Text E-mail
'll be ability in future to send email in plain text as an option. Some mailing lists require plain text so this would be very usefull.
You can now select to send plain text messages on ProtonMail: https://protonmail.com/blog/protonmail-v3-12-release-notes/

We just ask for a plain-text option. I mean, I know there's the plain format "Clear all formatting" option, but this is not enough. Is it so difficult to implement the usual convention?
One example. When you reply to a message, the original message should be block quoted with angle brackets and prefixed with a little header like this:
On <date>, <email_from_field> wrote:
> Quoted line 1. Something something. On line 2 I say something about something.
I think this is essential and I guess it has to be so easy to implement... This is an old request from protonmail users, so I don't understand where's the problem. Many people in the scientific community who I know are waiting for that option to be available to start to use protonmail. We want to get rid of gmail asap, but this is a very essential tool for an email composer... Plus I guess it can't be so difficult to implement it...

I require the ability to send plaintext only emails as well. It looks like this was "started" in July 2016... Any updates on this?

Multipart is good, but some mailing list (like the Linux kernel one) do not allow multipart and require plaintext only.

For me, this is by far the most important missing feature in protonmail right now. You say it's "started", do you have any idea on the release date for this?

I enquired ages ago about plain text and was told that it should arrive by late summer. It is now mid-winter, and still no plain text settings. I will not consider using Proton until plain text is a default option. How can a supposedly secure service even ship without plain text?

I've also voted for this. Despite ProtonMail's encryption I still use GPG-encrypted text within mails. In the current format, when copying from the browser into a GPG application, blank lines are inserted between the encrypted text lines, breaking the formatting and leaving the receiver unable to decrypt (unless they manually fix the formatting).
I hope the plain text option will be implemented soon as, for a privacy-focussed service, I believe it's very important.

Still looking forward to having a plain text option.

I also would like to see this feature implemented for a 3rd reason: When composing an email and adding copied text from a Website, in RTF editors that always looks terrible because of wrong font and line spacing. Posting to a plaintext control would easily solve this problem. Currently I have to paste it to notepad, cut it again and paste it into my mail I am writing...

I can't use Protonmail until I can send messages in plain text. I tried, and the mailing list bounced the message. This is too bad because I'm a paying user.

I hope this thread is about real text/plain MIME type e-mail support.
This thread is somewhat more clear: https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/284483-feedback/suggestions/12802572-plain-text

I just found this request before requesting it myself!
I prefer TEXT mails and was surprised NOT to find that option in the SETTINGS. No matter what is the default, but TEXT MUST be an option! -

Plain text means that you'll send email in text format not html.

Plain Text should be default.

That option in protonmail will be small part of a lot of function what protonmail offer .

I've already made a suggestion to the same effect:
https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/284483-feedback/suggestions/8495314-gracefully-handle-plain-text-emails-following-convNice to see other ProtonMail users who care about this. I've always found plain text email communication so much nicer than HTML. For one: Inline replies are very easy and efficient. I always struggle to do inline replies with HTML.
I've never had a problem with the lack of rich formatting features. Look:
*bold*
> quoteParagraph.
* a bullet point
* another bullet point1. Numbered item.
2. Numbered item. From a technical standpoint, plain text emails:
* are smaller.
* are simpler to render and therefore less likely to contain security issues.
* are better standardized and more compatible than HTML.
* are easier for automated systems to parse.I accept that that HTML email has some useful features, like inline images. Considering all the benefits of plain text, I can live without that particular feature and just attached images where necessary and mention them in the relevant portion of my replies.

With the ability to mantain tab characters (needed in mailing lists for open source projects like linux kernel)...
In this way it will be possible to use ProtonMail for those projects

I agree with Tim. Hopefully, Rich text will be available in the upgraded version. Much nicer than the bland Plain text.

It would also allow users to paste in signed/encrypted text using an arbitrary, local key.

1. Plain text option as opposed to simply rich text.
2. Controls for rich text would be nice. Bold, font size, and font.
