Gmail-like Categories
A helpful optional feature would be to have "categories" like Gmail does. For example, Primary, Social, Updates, etc. Also, the ability to create new categories would be nice (Gmail doesn't allow this).

I get hundreds of emails a day. By ascribing "Promotion" or "Social" attributes to email with particular characteristics when it hits my inbox (without create tedious Outlook style "Rules"), I can easily glance at, mark read, and bulk archive *hundreds* of emails a day.
Weaning myself from Gmail and going to Protonmail disarms this vital capability.
Note that they aren't placing these emails because they are sniffing their contents. I simply designate emails from certain sources as Social, Forums, promotions, etc., and that's where they go from that point.

Automatic categories along these lines would be great. It is the key thing preventing me from using Proton Mail as my default. Hey Mail perhaps has the best experience around the concept, though Apple's take on categories will likely be a good reference too.

Would be very helpful

A killer feature, indeed! There's too much noise in my inbox otherwise.

This is literally what annoys me about migrating to Proton Mail. This feature in Gmail is so great. It unclutters your mailbox by automatically moving unimportant emails to other categories (tabs in the UI). A Must have!

Having the basic automatic categories like the gmail options would be great. Additional categories can then be created by users.

absolut - its gets very compilcated without that feature. Even when put my emails in folders or filters, they still appear in main folder. the same as in gmail would be good, so you can easily switch i find.

Please, just make the Categories (Primary, Social, Promotional & Updates), and then WE can take it from there, ie., we can design filters and tell incoming emails where to go, ie., assign Categories to emails according to "From" certain Senders.
As it is, everything is all bunched together. Too chaotic. I want to use ProtonMail exclusively, and tell Gmail to go stuff it, but until we get Categories, I can't do that. I get way too many "Promotional" emails and cannot have them lumped together with my "Primary" emails.
Thanks for listening.

One thing I miss about using Gmail is the category tabs along the top. It's like having a mini-Chrome browser in Gmail where you can see all the tabs easily and know if there are new emails to look at, as opposed to just having folders in the side bar that are not usually high enough on the screen to look at. One way to take it a step further even than Gmail is to make those category tabs custom tabs so that I could put up to 5 folders of my choice up across the top as tabs. Thanks!

It would be really great if there would be separate folders (or tabs) in Protonmail's inbox, like in Gmail - especially if folks use several aliases and/or domains.
That is the one feature I miss from the Gmail service, because all my emails, though color-coded by label, end up in the same inbox space which gets chaotic-looking very quick. I just upgraded to Protonmail Plus, and thought I'd be getting an organizational tool such as this one.
Can something similar please be implemented? It'd be super helpful!!
