Independant Push Notification (GSF Independet)
After switching to Lineageos without a Google Playstore, I am unable to receive push notifications from protonmail, because it relies on the google service framework.
If you could keep an independent push notification functionality, like telegram foss or wechat, it's much appreciated.

I completely agree with the need for independent push notifications in Proton Products. Relying on Google Services Framework (GSF) hinders user privacy and limits functionality for those who prefer not to use Google apps.
I prefer having a background job that would check for new emails now an then than having continuous notification delivery tunneled through google servers.

This is an important feature I would like to see implemented.

This is a must and basic need for a privacy app.

It's ridiculous how long people have been requesting this. Battery life should no longer be an issue now that UnifiedPush exists (and distributor apps like Ntfy.sh work perfectly).

I have, and will only ever have, a deGoogled phone (I use LineageOS) without Google Play Services.
I need a sound notification for incoming mail that is private just like Protonmail emails.

It's crazy that this is still not fixed in the official app, specially as there is a workaround that requires a third party app (I don't need to say how bad it is, do not install the workaround please)
I want to see background synchronization being an option on all versions of the app. Should be fairly easy to warn the user about battery consumption (which is negligible honestly, no more than Play services). But unified Push must be implemented as well. It is very easy to implement and doesn't even have the battery consumption downside.
I'm so excited just thinking about Unified Push for ProtonMail.

"Privacy by default" it says on the top of the page, mockingly, as I am required to run Google Playservices on GrapheneOS to actually recieve my emails.

I would totally need this, because I use Android without Google Services and therefore without the ability to receive Google Push Notifications.
A setting for regularly polling for new mails or getting updates via a websocket connection would be great.
But the ability to trigger a webhook would also do the job for me. -

UnifiedPush exists and is being used by other apps. There's no reason to stay with Google anymore. I want to degoogle!

Do the developers not read the suggestions on this site?

Bruh. We use ProtonMail the NUMBER ONE reason being avoding google. And they do these kinds of shenanigans.
You know what, they don't have a public friendly issue tracker, they don't accept pull requests, they don't publish their services on f-droid. And now this.
I've recently listened to Techlore podcast, & it seemed like Andy's no different than any other corporate sc@mmers.
Believe me, PM looks like a FOSS service with GPLv3 but it technically isn't, because it doesn't follow OSF standards. -

You ask HOW CAN WE IMPROVE PROTON MAIL
But you are obviously virtue-signalling and don't actually care
This GSF thing is many years old. FFS people, we are shedding dipshits like gobble and crapple and microslop, people have had enough so fix your **** or we move somewhere else -

Its now 2023 and proton has not resolved this yet??!
I will be letting my subscription go to zero and finding another provider of secure mail and VPN, this is unacceptable and ridiculous.
Why would anyone use ProtonVPN or mail if it requires GSF?

This is even more important now that it's been confirmed that notifications are used for government surveillance (switching to an open source notification solution wouldn't fix this but it would be a good first step). It's ridiculous that this still hasn't had any movement despite the obvious demand and despite the fact that Proton is supposed to be a privacy oriented service.

"...Proton now officially supports GrapheneOS in their annual fundraiser."
I am using GraphenOS and the ProtonMail APK directly downloaded and installed from them & I am still receiving this error. I am wondering if this is only a "Paid" feature of ProtonMail?

As a paid user I want the fundamental notification service for my email to not be conveyed/potentially intercepted by a third party.

At least automatically polling in the background should work.
Especially as Proton now officially supports GrapheneOS in their annual fundraiser. -

After finally switching to a de-googled OS for my phone i was quite surprised that a service like ProtonMail would depend on the google services framework to function properly. Please provide an alternative for push notifications
