Custom domain mail hosting with Proton and SimpleLogin
I have a custom domain hosted through ProtonMail with two active mail boxes. When I add the MX records for both ProtonMail and Simplelogin, SimpleLogin refuses to verify the MX records for my domain. Granted, I have my DNS records to give priority to ProtonMail since I cannot afford to miss emails, but this is preventing me from being able to use SimpleLogin with my domain.

You can configure a subdomain to be used with SimpleLogin and domain name with Protonmail, or vice-versa. For that you just have to set the TXT and MX records on the subdomain instead of a domain.

I guess it's better to use either Proton or Simplelogin. I would stop only on SimpleLogin since they just forward emails wherever you need them.
Also, it might be worth taking a look at ProxiedMail since you will be able to move between email providers more freely. SimpleLogin belongs to Protonmail and they might be interested to keep you forever with Proton. -

As SimpleLogin belongs to Proton, Proton itself could set up both services together, so domains (and aliases, if applicable) set up in one will show up in the other.

That is because what you are trying to do is not possible.
MX records of a domain can only be pointing to one server at any given time. You can create a subdomain that points to another server though.
To use SimpleLogin, you would either point your parent domain there or create a subdomain that can be pointed to SimpleLogin while your parent domain points to ProtonMail.
