This is already possible actually, though not as straightforward to find as you would expect. But nevertheless with installing Protonmail Bridge and configuring in Outlook, as well as my Gmail and Live Mail account, I managed with a few extra steps to import all my existing 15 years of e-mails and contacts (putting this here as reference to https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/284483-feedback/suggestions/7358494-mass-export-of-emails-locally-in-mbox-format-unen)
This is already possible! Well perhaps not with any convenient interface or something like that, but if you're the slightest bit familiar with how to configure an IMAP e-mail account in for example Outlook you can use the Proton Bridge to export (but also import!) your emails through Outlook: https://protonmail.com/bridge/install
Some useful side notes:
1. Through setting up both your Protonmail account (through Proton Bridge) and your 2nd e-mail account, you can use fr example Outlook to copy all existing mails.
- You can right click any folder in Outlook and select 'Copy to...' to copy all mails in that folder to another account
- Note that for Protonmail the destination should also be 'Folders', meaning you can not directly copy your e-mails to for example 'Sent Items' or 'Inbox' in your Protonmail account
- If you do wish to import/export your items from sent or inbox folder you can first copy them to for example 'Folders/Inbox', and then separately in the Protonmail interface you are able to move the items to your Inbox / Sent items folder.Of course you can also use Protonmail Bridge in combination with any other 'imap backup tool' you can search for online.

Bonjour,
Je souhaiterais importer des messages reçus ou envoyés depuis Gmail, mais en gardant les informations d'origine (date et heure etc).
Ceci pour abandonner définitivement Gmail.
Cordialement -

Yes, that would be very helpful for a migration and it shouldn't be too complicated.

I fully agree: I signed up for ProtonMail 'cause of its high level of security, but I can't use it for the absence of "Import function" for free users. If this function isn't extended to those who aren't paying customers, ProtonMail project is intended to remain in a subordinate state, a mere niche product (although highly secure), compared to other large (but unsafe) e-mail systems, such as GMail , Hotmail or Outlook.
I hope this feature is introduced: I also have dozens and dozens of emails to import into my mailbox ... but I CAN'T DO IT. And It's piss me off! -

4 years was way too slow!
Don't bother continuing as it would be of no use to me.You can redirect emails - with some difficulty - on a semi 1-1 basis with a Thunderbird extension.
You will need to enable IMAP for Gmail though.
Also, the original dates/times are lost. -

I'd like to move selected emails from Gmail into a FREE account.
Gmail allow exports in a Mbox format - so an import of a few Mbox formatted emails would allow me to validate email export/import before committing to a paid protonmail account. -

Can you share this method in detail ?

I agree, if Protonmail is serious about being a competitor this issue needs the highest priority on their backlog. I'm cannot fully transition just because I cannot use a tool that is -from what I read- available for more expensive payment plans (Professional+) but not for mine (Plus). This is not what I'm paying for.

Seriously, moving messages, attachments, and retaining labels, read status, etc. is hardly optional. I'll happily pay for a Protonmail account which lets me IMPORT my entire gmail account, and as easily lets me EXPORT my Protonmail account should I ever want to do so. This is now a very old issue, and seems to be going nowhere. Had this issue been addressed first, I'm guessing that Protonmail would be making very substantial in-roads into gmail turf.

ProtonMail Bridge is for payed users.
Free users need an easy and free way to migrate mails from e.g. Gmail to ProtonMail. It could be done with a simple import functionality with mbox file format or more advanced similar to Gmail's free service where users can directly import mails and contacts from Yahoo!, Hotmail, AOL etc.
As a free user I have thousands of mails which I must migrate to ProtonMail and forwarding them manually is an impossible task. My only option at this moment is either not to use ProtonMail at all or be a payed user and install ProtonMail Bridge. I believe most free users are like me and will keep using Gmail until such import is realized.
Upvote if you agree.

Dear ProtonMail Team,
I did a brave attempt to convince my social circle to make the switch to Protonmail, many of them have a PHD, are well-skilled in computer sciences and familiar with the business model used by companies like Google. It turns out 80% sticks with google because the switch is considered "too much of a hassle".
From this viewpoint, I would like to stress that this kind of functionality is imperative. Not for the ProtonMail community itself perhaps (the people that typically participate in these kinds of feedback channels), but the PROSPECTIVE ProtonMail community that you might not hear from as much.
And not only that; when introduced, I hope this functionality will ask as little effort from the end user as possible. That is, in some web GUI:
* The end user provides the "original" Gmail/Yahoo/Outlook login data.
* The end user provides the desired Protonmail address (default could be derived from original address), and a Protonmail password.
* For existing Protonmail accounts there could be, in addition to the above, an "import" button in the Protonmail account settings....and that should be about it.
* Necessary tools could be downloaded automatically.
* Protonmail account could be set up automatically (when not present yet).
* Depending on "original" mailbox content, the proper Protonmail plan could be selected automatically.
* If the end user wishes to have less storage than required, still all the mails could be imported. In that case for the oldest ones, only the headers are stored (the originals could be backed up on the end user's machine, with encryption if desired).
* If the user decides to upgrade later, the empty placeholder messages could be replaced by the real ones in a second migration effort.
* Things like reset/notification email address for the new Protonmail account and automatic forwarding of Gmail/Yahoo/Outlook to the new account could all be set automatically, perhaps in some kind of wizard where the end user can give his/her preferences.
* Things like labels, attachments, contacts and conversations should be preserved.
* Anything that cannot successfully be imported could be backed up on the end user's machine and reported to the user in a concise list showing message details, reason of failure etc.
* For those who do not wish to share their Gmail/Yahoo/Outlook credentials with Protonmail, there could be a "manual" alternative.Well... that's just a general impression of course. Many points I'm trying to make you are probably well aware of (or have counter arguments for). My main point is that this functionality should kick ass right from the start. Otherwise people might decide it's "not so easy after all" and not come back a few versions later when it has become a piece of cake.
The force of vendor lock-in should not be underestimated.

Is there still no way to import gmail mail and folders over to protonmail?? Are there any other alternative email companies that DO have that capability?

Not long discovered Protonmail and after reading about it signed up...but like others the big limitation is the inability to import gmail mail and folders.

Gmail allows you to export in MBOX format. Can we import emails from the MBOX format here?

This would help the migration from other providers, otherwise I need to keep open both your web interface and my email client

ProtonMail should add a mail collect feature for outside email addresses (Gmail,GMX etc ).
