I am looking for these kind of function since a long time. Many android apps just work local but still phone home over the internet. And I'm pretty sure they talk about me :)

I also like the idea, because all firewalls apps are using a VPN function and so you always have to decide for the firewall function or the vpn function. If the app blocker/filter is included in Proton VPN there is no trade-off anymore.

I need this! I used to use Tracker Control, which also uses a locale VPN to regulate the connections of apps. Since I use Proton VPN, this feature is missing as you cannot have multiple VPN services enabled at the same time.
Keyboards are another good example, since they can spy on you by keylogging. I tried a few open source keyboards but none were as good or at least customizable enough for me to switch from the native one. By turning off its internet connection I would not have to be afraid of that as I also use always on VPN.

I love this idea, so I don't have to decide between using net guard or proton VPN

I don't need it on my daily phone because I'm rooted, but that would make my life easier on other devices.
Netguard need VPN functionality to filter Internet access.
