Proton VPN: Add regional DNS resolvers to reduce latency outside Europe
Many Proton VPN users outside of Europe (e.g. in Australia, New Zealand, SE Asia, and South America) experience slow DNS resolution when using Proton DNS via VPN — especially on mobile apps like Proton Mail, which rely on many secure subdomains.
Currently, Proton DNS resolvers appear to be hosted in Switzerland (or nearby), which introduces noticeable latency for users on the other side of the globe — even when connected to local VPN servers like Melbourne or Sydney.
Suggestion: Deploy regional Proton DNS resolvers or mirrors in long-latency zones like:
Australia (Melbourne, Sydney)
South America (e.g. São Paulo)
SE Asia (e.g. Singapore)
North America West Coast
These resolvers could be:
Accessible only from Proton VPN IP ranges (to maintain privacy)
Operated under Proton’s strict no-logs policy
Geo-routed from VPN exit nodes to minimize DNS latency
This would significantly improve real-world performance for Proton VPN users, particularly for those accessing services like Proton Mail, where even 150–200ms of DNS delay adds up.
Thanks for considering this — the service is fantastic, and this would make it even better globally.
