Restructure Lumo tiers
Dear Proton Community and Development Team,
We propose a restructuring of Proton Lumo's Free and Plus tiers to maximize user acquisition, engagement, and the demonstration of Lumo's powerful capabilities, while still maintaining Proton's commitment to privacy and sustainable growth. The current free tier's strict weekly query limit, while understandable for resource management, can hinder broad adoption and prevent users from fully experiencing the potential of Lumo.
Our proposal is as follows:
1. Lumo Free Tier Enhancement:
* Unlimited Access to an Efficient AI Model: This would provide users with a robust, always-available AI for everyday tasks such as quick questions, brainstorming, simple content generation (e.g., drafting emails, social media posts), and basic information retrieval. This "efficient" model would prioritize speed and cost-effectiveness, making Lumo a truly reliable and consistent tool for daily, non-intensive AI interactions.
* Limited Access to a Powerful AI Model (Reasoning, Math, Code, Complex Analysis): To allow free users to experience the cutting-edge capabilities of Lumo's more advanced models, we propose offering a limited quota for these "powerful" models. This limited access could be, for example, a specific number of queries per day/week, or a total token count. This "taste" of the powerful AI would be invaluable for showcasing its potential for complex problem-solving, detailed analysis, coding assistance, and advanced reasoning, thereby creating a compelling reason to upgrade.
- Lumo Plus/Pro Tier:
- Unlimited Access to All Models (Efficient and Powerful): The premium tier would offer completely unrestricted access to both the efficient and powerful AI models. This would cater to power users, professionals, and developers who require seamless, high-volume access to Lumo's full range of capabilities for their critical and demanding tasks. This tier would retain all current Lumo Plus benefits, such as extended history, file uploads, and prioritized support, ensuring a comprehensive premium experience.
Justification and Benefits:
* Increased User Acquisition & Engagement: An "unlimited efficient" free tier would significantly lower the barrier to entry, encouraging more users to adopt Lumo for their daily AI needs, making it a staple tool.
* Effective Upsell Strategy: By offering a direct, hands-on experience with the "powerful" AI models (even if limited) in the free tier, users can concretely see the value of upgrading to Lumo Plus for unlimited, high-performance capabilities. This shifts the upgrade incentive from "lifting a restriction" to "unlocking greater power."
* Demonstration of Value: This model clearly differentiates the utility of various AI models, educating users on when to use a quick, efficient model versus a deep, powerful one.
* Alignment with Proton's Mission: By offering a highly functional free tier, Proton reinforces its commitment to making privacy-focused tools accessible to everyone, while still maintaining a sustainable revenue model through the premium offering.
* Competitive Edge: This tiered approach could position Lumo more competitively against other AI services by providing a genuinely useful and less restrictive free option, especially for users prioritizing privacy.
We believe this proposed structure would greatly enhance the Lumo user experience, drive adoption, and clearly articulate the value proposition of Lumo Plus, strengthening Proton's position in the AI landscape.
Thank you for considering this proposal.

Hi Kelly, I understand your concerns, but Lumo+ provides access to chat history, large file uploads, unlimited favourite chats etc.

Hi Christian, this wouldn't be twice the amount of work - Lumo+ subscribers already get the more powerful models, this would just mean offering a "taste". Also their models are not in-house - they use Mistral.

The tier restructuring that I'd really like to see is a Lumo discount for paid Proton users -- making it cheaper as an "addon" than as a standalone product.
Right now Lumo costs just as much as a Proton Unlimited subscription! I see value in Lumo, but not so much as to entice an existing customer to DOUBLE his monthly bill for an AI assistant.
Lumo Plus does advertise "access to advanced AI models" as a distinguishing feature. Unfortunately, there is no opportunity to try them out and see what value they add before buying. If they are truly stellar, perhaps the OP's suggestion of giving free users a taste of what they can do would help increase sales.

but wouldn't that mean maintaining 2 models and having double the amount of work? Also "unlimited" seems like people would take advantage of it. You would at least need a fair use policy and make it not actualy unlimited

This right here is an issue. By making the free tier this way, it offers too much for free.

No. At this time, what they currently offer is sufficient. if users want more, they are encouraged to pay.
> "unlimited efficient" free tier
By having this, it doesn't entice users enough into paying for more features. It tells them "Why pay when we have unlimited efficient but for free"
Implementing another type of a balanced tier might be a viable option.

Thanks for the timely and well delivered product. I love it.
I agree with the above comments, the pricing structure leaves a little to be desired.
However, I would also suggest an intermediate tier that has higher usage limits on the advanced models, which is included in the Proton Unlimited package.
I think this will encourage uptake from existing proton customer, who may then take the leap to the advanced model. It also builds rapport with existing customers.
Another option would be a small supplement to the Proton Unlimited, which allows access to the Lumo Unlimited tier.
I'm really cautious of the existing model. Garmin and Duolingo have tried excluding current customers from their AI features and it hasn't gone so well.
