Increase storage
Increase storage or create a an email downloading vault to store old emails and free space in the account!

With the new domain, rebranding and pricing we also increased available storage significantly (https://proton.me/pricing). Marking this as done - for any new ideas regarding this please open a separate topic.

Suggestions for essential plans:
Plan 1 : free
1GB
1 adresses + 2 aliases
150 Messages sent per day
20 Labels
POP3/IMAP/SMTP! Come now!
Limited supportPlano 2: 1€
2GB
2 adresses + 3 aliases
300 Messages sent per day
1 Custom domain
80 Labels
POP3/IMAP/SMTP! Come now!
SupportWith these essential plans, it would provide a balance accessible to all people who have an internet connection and would be an example, that it is possible to provide the right of any citizen of the world to have access to a less invasive mail oriented to privacy.
We should not compare people who pay netflix with people who care about privacy are groups of different people ie different clients. This is not to say that someone who has netflix does not want protonmail or some privacy-oriented email.

I think ProtonMail should increase the size of FREE accounts to 20GB like Gmail which has a 15GB limit but more. Let's face it, we are concerned about privacy but it all adds up to security. We have bills to pay and the medical/banking hacking is on the rise and there's a lot spam out there. I need something more secure. Besides in the professional world, users tend to make mistakes when it comes to security.
If 20GB seems farfetched, then 15GB should suffice but I'm sure users would want more GB space for free than MB. If I have to, I'll gladly purchase more storage when the time comes.
On a sidenote, ProtonMail sounds cooler than Gmail anyways.

When you stop to think about it, $50 yr for what Protonmail offers is not a bad deal. What do you pay for your cell phone service? Most people I know gladly pay around $100 yr for netflix or amazon or spend $60 on a game, but don't want to pay a dime for email service which confuses me. Most secure email services don't allow even free accounts... But I agree with adding an option to only purchase storage space.

Can we have more space for cheaper option? I don't mind paying 1 buck monthly for, say, 2 GB storage space. 5 USD is a bit steep as monthly commitment, especially when I have no use for Custom domain or alias bla bla.

Reliability is obviously part of security in the larger sense. So losing emails is not acceptable. One way to lose emails is if the mailbox is full. This problem can be solved in 2 ways:
1) as with other providers such as Microsoft an option (at a certain price) to have unlimited email storage;
or2) buy 2 mailboxes and have second (next) mailbox used if first (previous) mailbox is 99% full, so that no emails get lost without warning which allows the time to take action.
This functionality will also be necessary for organisational accounts because organisations (profit or not for profit) must keep certain information for 10 or more years. An easy example are emails from students which must be kept as part of student records for very long time. And student records are confidential.

I am also in favour of losing the free option altogether for a low cost annual fee for say a small 2gb size mailbox.

Free services inevitably moves into paid subscriptions, but for 500mb free to start with is somewhat un-inviting of a service. To start free at 2GB and then to move to sub for 5gb and up is much more enticing of a service. Understanding that growth of back-end storage may be of some concern to go that slightly larger free service, we can only hope in time this gets upgraded.

10€/year for a 2GB account would be great.

I think a better option is to have more options for plans, since nothing is free. Those who are paying for the paid version are helping those who aren't paying. But 50 dollars a year might be a little too much for some people to pay
Instead of the option being 500MB for free for 5GB for 50 dollars a year. Maybe 1-2 dollars a month for 1GB, which I think more people would be willing to pay.
The problem is increasing the free too high that nobody ends up paying and then no funding comes in for protonmail, except donations.
I think maybe there should be more plans instead of just increasing the free account. The free account should be as basic as possible in my opinion.

I believe that 500MB are ideal and VERY GENEROUS for a free email that respects and protects your privacy. Increasing the FREE storage option to 1GB would be good for us but it wouldn't be financially sustainable for Protonmail(it would risk its long-term sunstainability). To conclude, keep it at 500MB or increase it ONLY by 100MB.

Agree. 500MB can be very limited.
I vote for 1GB free and $10 / year for a 2GB upgrade -

500MB free isn't that bad.. Instead allow the option to "donate" a one-time payment for every extra added space. I'm alright with donating $1-2 for 1 GB extra..
Why 500MB free and paying for extra GB is okay, is because, unlike Google / Outlook, ProtonMail doesn't sell your personal data through ads. ProtonMail depends on us donating / paying for services. That's just how economy works..
I'd love to see at least a one-time payment option to add extra space. -

The only reason free email providers offer such huge storage is that it comes at the expense of your privacy and security ultimately.
Please, ProtonMail, paying customers are paying customers.
Don't unnecessarily waste resources or disc space on those who aren't parting with cash.

You'll get better free options after more people pay for services. So deal with the amount you get now, or pay for the service and help everyone out.

Would love to see 1GB - 2GB free storage across all standard accounts. I believe this would attract more users and also impact the number of users that would upgrade to the paid premium service. If it's not an option then maybe it could be offered as an incentive to donate to the service.
"Donate today and increase your storage to 2GB! No minimum donation amount required."

1GB free is good enough. If possible a low cost option for 2-4 GB upgrade (5-10 $per year).

I think 1GB free is already fair.
What I think would makes more sense would be some low price subscriptions (like 5$/year), for small improvements (like this 2GB feature).
I would be interested for options that feels like "I pay for what I get" instead of "I pay for the others who doesn't pay".
Whereas I see the absolute need to have incomes (so only from the ones who pays) covering all the expenses (so including the ones who doesn't pay and the development), not everybody has 48$/year to spend on emails (particularly when some must have features like filters are missing).
I think that theses "lower price" subscriptions may help people crossing the line to paid subscriptions, thus increasing the available money for development. -

you can have anything between 5GB to 20GB in the "plus" plan, in 1GB steps. each GB will cost you 1$/month. you don't need to go "visionary" to get more space.

The $5/month plan needs more storage. I have three accounts I would like to migrate to Protonmail, and I need about 25GB storage total. This is a lot more than the $5/month plan offers, but the next step up in storage is $30/month, which is prohibitively expensive.
Online storage is cheap now, and Protonmail's service should reflect that.

Price $ per gigabyte, that way we can choose the amount of space required.
