Remove dependance on google play services
Protonmail android app is dependent on google play services and that is obviously against privacy and security.
Users who removed/disable google play services or used vanilla "lineageos" without gapps cannot get the mail client work properly.
Google play services collect every possible piece of info about the user; location, body sensors, application usage, and every other possible thing. So telling the use to enable/install google services you compromise his privacy and security by 3rd party app which is clearly against the idea if Protomail.
I hope you can correct this and have no dependence on google at all.

Implementation or further work towards imap support for usage of clients such as K9 mail would be beneficial and would aid to the goal or removal of the dependence of google's push service.
im currently working on a temp. fix for getting notifications to work with nothing but fdroid resources and microg.

As far as I've understood, the only usage of GSF is for push notifications.
My phone does not have GSF installed, and the only annoyances are the message on start and the fact that e-mails are not synced in the background. I see that this "feature" is planned, but it has been planned for almost 2 years. I think someone should definitely start working on it.... -

These are the guys who are abusing our privacy, and why I came to ProtonMail to begin with. It is kind of silly for you to be offering a great privacy product, but then steer us to the greatest abusers of privacy in the world. I would not want to see any links to Facebook or Google at ProtonMail.

As a contributor to Protonmail, I find quite hilarious how dependent it is on Google and it's services. Why on earth would I want Google to keep a registry of my downloaded apps? Not to talk about other 'features' in the app, which apparently need Google to function?
Even though APKs can be found in the wild, it would be nice to get it from a centralized and trusted source like F-Droid. Makes upgrading easier too... -

I second that. In my quest for perfect privacy (if that's even possible) I'm getting rid of every Google service. I've created a ProtonMail account, installed an alternative rom to my Android device without any of the Gapps, and just find out that even if I could download the APK and install it, I can't use the app because it depends on Google Play services.
That's a bit ironic.... -

Please get a GSF/Google Play Services free version and/or find a way to do push notifications without Google services. This is important for users who run custom Android ROMs without Google framework installed and it is also important for users who may use Google Play Store as they will not be relying on this for notifications. Proton Mail is a privacy focused service but this continued reliance on Google is both concerning and frustrating. Please consider raising the importance for the development of this "feature".

Yes, please. Protonmail needs a non-Google option or I need a new provider that clearly cares about privacy.

Kinda annoying to always see the "ProtonMail won't run without Google Play services" message when using the app. It still confuses me that an application aimed at privacy concerned users is dependant on the Google service framework. It's also irritating, that the application is only officially available in the Google Play Store! Why not offer it in F-Droid, or from the website like Threema does it?

I am even willing to pay extra to have this dependency removed!
PLEASE! This is ridiculous. I have a ton of apps that can send notifications without play services dependency. Even if you cannot remove this dependency for notifications (for whatever reason) - please add an option to stop using notifications. I will refresh the app manually if I want to - just remove the annoying pop-up message for now. -

Support said 30.12.2017: "Thank you for your message. At this time, we utilize Google Play services to implement the push notifications. We will try to find other ways to support push notifications in the future."

I too use LineageOS without GAPPS. It is really important that the dependency for Google Play Services is removed. The app does work without only the push notifications are not working then.
I could live with some configurable polling (5, 15, 60, ... minutes)Also i would really really like that you provide the .apk on your site. I have now downloaded it from some site but that is not a recommended way security wise.

This was planned a year ago. Any official word from the ProtonMail Team? If you want to convince the privacy conscious among us, you really need to get that app into F-Droid

I am also really looking forward to this. What I don't understand, when I open Protonmail on my CarbonROM Android without any Google services, I get this message that Google services is required, even though the Protonmail app seems to work just fine without it.

ProtonMail app is still using Google Play Services for pushing notifications. It could be nice to have this functionality for those (like me) dont have any GAPPS on their device.
For example, I receive notifications with a similar app (Telegram F-Droid).

Are there any updates on this?
It's been said a thousand times in this thread but privacy needs independency from Google and that means providing an alternative way to get ProtonMail app for android (f-droid, apk download from protonmail website) and removing the need for Google Services from the app. As many other users, I don't mind if I have to update my inbox manually.
Thanks.
