Proton mobile operating system (OS)
I want to see Proton tie up with mobile manufacturers to create their own mobile operating system thus giving stiff competition to google and apple.

Proton teaming up with mobile manufacturers to develop its own mobile operating system would be a significant step in diversifying the smartphone market and offering users a more privacy-focused alternative to Google and Apple. This collaboration could bring Proton's strong commitment to privacy and security to the mobile realm, providing users with a more secure and transparent mobile experience. https://instapro2app.com

I agree that it would be great to see Proton tie up with mobile manufacturers to create their own mobile operating system. This would give users more choice and competition in the mobile OS market, and it would also help to promote privacy-focused alternatives to Android and iOS. I hope that Proton will be able to make this happen in the future! https://mpbhulekh.net/

There is a growing demand for privacy-focused mobile operating systems, and Proton is well-positioned to meet this demand. A partnership with mobile manufacturers would give Proton OS a wider reach and help to challenge the dominance of Google and Apple. I believe that this is a great idea that would benefit both Proton and consumers. https://whatsgbpro.org/

Please do _not_ do this. Focus on your core products (email in particular), instead of trying to do everything!

I came to this page because I thought about "Proton Contacts" and "Proton Notes". But when I sync them to my Phone, it's mostly watched by GoogleServices. So, nice that nobody can access my data, but everyone.
ProtonMail is secure. I know it. But its not. Because ProtonMail is on my mobile phone. And GoogleServices is also on my phone.
That's now my biggest wish. You've got 3 votes!
We need that!I would buy and share it.

Good idea. Nearly everyone has a smartphone these days, and pretty much all options require you to accept telemetry from Google, Apple, and often multiple others at the same time, although some more than others. There is simply no privacy-first alternative.
Pretty much the only choice we have is to flash a custom rom without Google Mobile Services and GApps, while hosting a private Nextcloud instance and use DAVx⁵ + ICSx⁵ for CalDAV (Calendar), CardDAV (Tasks) and WebDAV (Cloud) based private mobile services. This sets the technical bar pretty high.
What's missing in the market is a user friendly privacy-first alternative with a lower bar to entry and less (self-hosted) maintenance.
Wouldn't it be great if there were an AOSP version of Android with Proton branding and all Proton services integrated by default.
It could be a LineageOS derivative, or LineageOS-MicroG for users willing to _opt-in_ to FCM (which is Google) for notifications.
All Proton services could be perfectly integrated.- ProtonMail
- CalendarPerhaps you can login using your Proton id and auto-detect and set up additional services.
- ProtonVPN
- Proton DriveIt's also a good starting ground to figure out what new services are in demand.
- Syncable Contacts
- Some kind of Notes alternative like /e/os hasWhat's in it for Proton?
- A way to find out how services need to improve for a seamless user experience on mobile
- An honest way to upsell users from free to plus or from plus to unlimited when starting related apps
- Wow-factor publicityI think Proton will find out that users are becoming aware that they (their telemetry) are being sold, and they'd rather pay a fair price for privacy and data sovereignty.
Now depending on how much expendable budget they end up having from extra sales through ProtonOS, perhaps they can sponsor or collaborate with either MicroG if they end up using it as upstream repository.

I think privacy oriented AOSP rom would be great. De-googled roms are great and all, but what I'd like to see is a ROM that actively denies access to data and information, or "poisons the well" by submitting random noise to any apps, including google. Whether we like it or not, most people still want access to google's app ecosystem, so having the comfort of android with much more aggressive privacy controls, tracking protection and robust encryption would imho work for many people.
Low-level system access would also allow for useful privacy features like ability to clone encrypted system image to a usb drive and replace the system on the phone with a dummy install son the go. Then easily restore the original system image later. Great for border checks etc.

I think it's better to focus on laying the ground work for other projects. For instance, getting a collaboration with a Android distro team or simply forking a project.
The problem with this, though, is that making sure a distro is actually more secure is a lot of work. They also have to know that they can trust the dev team so that the end-product is something they can put the Proton name by.
Building an OS from the ground up, however, is a daunting task that is not realistic at this point. No matter how cool it could be.
Having said that, I'd rather have a better Android OS than something all new that would require every app maker to make a new version. It's just not feasable and it wouldn't do much for "privacy for the masses". They focus on making mainstream alternatives that happen to be secure and private. You don't need to start an OS development project (that will likely fail and be highly costly) to achieve this.

Too much work would be needed.
You can just use degoogled AOSP-based system (LineageOS or /e/ for example). -

I think this is a very unrealistic and very time consuming request and that Proton shouldn't focus on creating such a complex application. There are already many different unpopular alternatives to Android and ios such as Pure os and Lineage os.

This is my 2 cents, I don't think I'm right or wrong. Just my opinion:
If Proton were to either take the AOSP and add proton features to it like their mail, calendar, drive, etc etc, add something like F-Droid for the app the store, or partner up with someone like LineageOS who'd do most of the heavy lifting on that side. Also I didn't know this, but based on the comment below, remove the Google Play Services reliance for notifications. This would be a monumental thing to do, and I do not expect them to do this as much as I can hope. But if they did, well i might have to find a phone that is easy to swap the OS out on just for this. -

There are plenty of open source operating systems available. Therefore it's not a good idea for Proton to waste time writing another one.
ProtonMail is perpetuating the problem by using Google Play Services (GPS) for notifications. I've degoogled my phone by installing LineageOS without any gapps but ProtonMail requires GPS to push notifications.
I'm going to switch to Tutanota until Proton fix this reliance on Google Services.
