Phone Number alias / masking
It would be nice to have a app from Proton which gives a virtual phone number. (Like Google Voice)

Overview
I am proposing the development of a Phone Number Alias feature (similar to Proton Pass email aliases) that allows users to generate secondary, virtual phone numbers. This feature would serve as a privacy shield, allowing users to keep their primary mobile numbers private while maintaining full functionality for account security and essential communications.
Key Functionality
Two-Step Verification (2FA): The primary use case is providing a secure, private number for online account profiles and 2FA codes, reducing the risk of SIM-swapping attacks on a user's primary line.
Inbound Focus: To prevent platform abuse, these numbers would be restricted to receiving calls/SMS and responding to incoming threads only, rather than initiating outbound cold calls.
Granular Control: Users should have the ability to mute, block, or "burn" (delete) an alias at any time.
Data Breach Mitigation: In the event of a third-party data breach, the user’s real identity remains protected. If an alias is leaked to bad actors or telemarketers, it can be deactivated without the hassle of changing one's primary legal phone number.
The Value Proposition
As data breaches become more frequent, the personal phone number has become a "universal identifier" used by advertisers and hackers alike. By offering virtual aliases, Proton can provide a comprehensive privacy ecosystem that protects not just a user’s email and files, but their cellular identity as well.

This is really a critical feature! I've been looking for a virtual phone number service for weeks, and there doesn't seem to be one that is actually safe/private.

I would love this feature, it would be a very welcome addition to Proton Pass. Feels like I’m quite anonymous online wrt e-mail adresses used, but absolutely not with my phone number, and it’s needed in so many places :(.

This is totally possible and would require some work but I don't think it would be a huge undertaking. We see a lot of competitors out there already doing a 'Relay' concept. Where those providers forward messages and emails to user accounts / phones. Proton already does this with emails and email aliases. We would just need the same relay concept for sms at least, I don't know about actual calling and voice conversations

We really need this feature today. I am in France and scammers call and text me every day trying to rip me off. We know very well that this is due to data leaks and the sale of our data. This would no longer happen if we could hide our phone numbers.
Firefox Relay does this, but only in Canada and the United States... -

I came to the forum to request this specific feature. It would be great to have phone number masking available to block unknown and unwanted texts and calls.

I am tired of using google Voice. I hate google products. I know they are stealing my data and all of my information. Why cant Proton create a VoIP service to let premium members have a seperate phone. Please create a system like Google Voice so I can leave them.

i would LOVE this but only if i can send and receive texts and calls. i think with unlimited it should be limited to like, 2 or 3 numbers, with a fee for more lines, but that's something for Proton to figure out
if this gets added, i'd want the ability to set custom number behaviour, so by default only ring if the number is in your contacts, and if it's not do one of a few things, like block the number and do not accept a voicemail, only accept a voicemail, or better yet, have an option to give a "number disconnected" error to numbers not in your contacts. then also be able to set behaviour for blocked numbers too (selecting from the aforementioned list)
this would be awesome and i'd probably ditch having a normal phone number in favour of this, especially if i could run it on multiple PCs, and have it ring in all locations and accept the call wherever i pick up.

If a company like Hushed can do it Proton can. Either buy out hushed or aquire your own way of making a VOIP. If I could ditch Hushed / Google Voice I would and come to you. Having a burner number to forward calls / texts / VM's to my real number would be awesome protection. Please look at implementing this!
