Privacy-first local media compression & conversion tool (Photos & Videos)
I would like to propose a privacy-first media compression and conversion tool that runs entirely on local devices (PC and smartphones), without uploading any photos or videos to external servers.
Description:
This application would allow users to safely compress and convert images and videos directly on their own devices.
By leveraging human visual perception–aware compression methods, media files can be significantly reduced in size while preserving visual quality and original resolution (pixel dimensions).
Users could optionally convert media into next-generation formats such as AVIF, JPEG XL, or AV1, choosing between compatibility-focused or efficiency-focused options.
All processing would be performed locally, ensuring full user data ownership and zero exposure to third-party servers.
Value for Proton ecosystem:
This tool would not only protect user privacy, but also help reduce global bandwidth and storage usage across Proton services, including Proton Mail attachments, Proton Drive uploads, and media sent to AI services.
Smaller files mean lower traffic costs, better performance, and a more sustainable infrastructure at scale.
Why Proton:
A local-first, user-controlled approach to media optimization aligns strongly with Proton’s core principles of privacy, security, and user data sovereignty.
Proton is uniquely positioned to set a new standard for “safe by design” media optimization.
