I would love to see an official Proton Mail browser extension that provides fast and convenient access to Proton Mail directly from the browser toolbar — similar in concept to GMX MailCheck, but implemented according to Proton’s privacy and security standards.
Useful features could include:
- Proton Mail icon in the browser toolbar
- unread/new mail counter displayed as a badge
- notifications for new messages
- one-click access to the inbox
- quick “Compose” button
- convenient handling of mailto: links
- optional preview of new messages
- optional support for multiple Proton Mail accounts
An especially useful feature would be the ability to receive new-mail notifications and update the unread badge without requiring a Proton Mail tab to remain open permanently.
The most important point would be that this is an official Proton extension. Third-party browser extensions that require access to email data are not an ideal solution for users who specifically choose Proton because of privacy and security.
The extension would not need to be overly complex. Even a lightweight browser toolbar button with an unread counter, notifications, “Open Inbox”, and “Compose” would already make everyday use significantly more convenient.
Such an extension could provide a useful middle ground between keeping a Proton Mail tab open all the time and running the full desktop application.
In my view, this would make Proton Mail considerably more practical and convenient for users who primarily work in a desktop browser.
