Control Costs By Cutting Fluff, Not Firing Employees
If Proton is under financial pressure, which is probably is, then cut the products paying customers did not ask for. What is the market for a good and private email service? Ask Fastmail: they've been doing it since 1999 for only paid customers (after brief trial periods).
I think it can be said that all the paying customers want are email and perhaps value adding but inexpensive features maybe on top of that.
If other products are valuable, then people will pay for them after a trial period and a reasonable cost for the given product. Bundling everything together obfuscates what is valuable for everyone.
If people will not pay for it, then it is not valuable to offer. Look at how much "AI" suffers from giving things away to people who would not pay anything to use it, and how many would admit to be willing to pay to avoid it.
If it costs money and does not bring in money, cut it, no matter how cool it might be.
All employees who are doing the jobs they were hired to do can keep their jobs and the business can make money.
Make it fair and easy, but clear what one is paying for, and then cut the things that do not do not have a justified existence. Lumo is computationally expensive...but does exactly the same thing as Duck.ai and everybody else. So cut it. Wait until it is justified by real demand, people searching to pay for a lying chatbot that is moderately private.
Mail? That is why all paying customers are here I think, so make a Mail only plan, or maybe bundle only the calendar with it if that is what people expect.
Let users pay for what they want to use, and nothing more.
Or maybe I just don't understand modern business, where burning money on things nobody wants seems to be the ticket to trillions...real soon now.
