1. Commit to remaining free of any and all AI tools

   Proton, so far, has been a bastion of "the Internet we actually wanted". This is why it was so disheartening to see that the company is now seriously considering integrating GenAI into its suite of tools.

   As the tide of big tech moves toward forcing AI tools into the face of every user, the existence of a platform that is explicitly not doing this is a breath of fresh air. There is no reason to "innovate for the sake of innovation". Let your competitors waste their time and energy being late to the party with the 80th, 90th, and 100th AI tools to come to market.

   Beyond the user experience, there is a plethora of moral reasons to avoid this AI plague:

   • The mass exploitation of human labour used to tag inputs for these models
   • The environmental effects of generating power used to train them
   • The obscene amount of fresh drinking water diverted toward cooling
   • The degradation of information quality, as the human knowledge encoded in language is substituted with statistical approximations

   Please, reconsider this. It's been refreshing to use a platform that wasn't mindlessly chasing big tech trends, and to lose that now would give me an extremely disappointing reason to go searching once again for alternatives.

2. Focus on functionality and feature parity on existing products

   Proton should really focus on building with feature parity in mind. Most of their products work differently depending on the OS and that's not a good experience. Plenty of people use different OS (for example both Windows and Mac computers, the wife with Android, the husband with iPhone and the tech kid on Linux.

   STOP overmoderating, STOP spreading thin your resources and FOCUS.

   The "iPad iOS Version" idea (138 votes - https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/284483-proton-mail/suggestions/11555208-ipad-ios-version-rather-than-stretched-iphone-vers), marked [🟠PLANNED] in 2016, remains unfulfilled and un-updated after 9 years.
   (By the way, an iPad version is still strangely non-existent, the new Proton Mail iOS app might fix this, but so far there's been no updates.)

   Technical Issues:
   The platform itself displays technical errors (e.g., CORS policy blocking images from S3), adding to the sense of disrepair. (Hint, for devtools, press F12 or ⌥+⌘+I)

   This pattern of behavior suggests a need for improved management of community voice, to ensure UserVoice functions as a tool for engagement rather than perceived silencing.
   I urge for change.

   As a European Proton customer I would like to advice Proton to think long and hard about the setup of this forum.

   I just had sign away the storing of my name, ip adress and other things just to provide feedback to Proton.

   And I had to gain access to the forum through Facebook or Google.

5. Proton Sheets - Undo via keyboard shortcut inconsistent

   On Mac within safari, using cmd+Z to undo within Proton Sheets sometimes undoes the last action in sheets as it should, or it randomly switches to undoing within safari (reopening a closed tab).

   unclear to me when it choses to do which, but it's very disorienting.

6. Proton sheets - backspace or change of a cell should not lose formatting + formula weirdness

   I have a column of dates. If I change one, the formatting of the cell reverts to black text even though I changed it to white.

   I also have a row of cells that are dark with white text. if I hit backspace on the cell (ie getting rid of the text) the cell loses its background colour.

   I've tried recreating one of my google sheets in proton sheets, but I haven't managed to get very far. Having to continually reformat things is tedious. I knew that functionality would be basic initially, but this is a simple duration counter (for tracking birthdays/ages).

   The formula don't work the same?

   have a few cells set up as follows:
   =DATEDIF(A4,T2,"Y")
   =DATEDIF(A4,T2,"YM")
   =DATEDIF(A4,T2,"MD")

   (where A4 is the "start" date and T2 is today's date.)
   this spits out the years/months/days between those two dates.

   But when I refer to those like so:
   =D4&" is "&Q4&" years, "&R4&" months, "&S4&" days old."
   (D4 being the name of the person)

   it SHOULD say
   Name is x years, x months, and x days old

   what it does instead is:
   Name is 35 years, 11 months, 17.10994212962963 days old.

   Yet the day cell had no decimal points, it was simply 17. Google sheets treats this as an integer, too.

   EDIT:

   I noticed this is because I used
   =NOW()
   like I did in google, but here I should have used
   =TODAY()

   changing that fixed the creation of a crazy long fraction. I sort of understand the logic to this, but I feel like being able to port across from google sheets logic would be beneficial.

   EDIT 2: also, if someone specifically set up a cell with, say, two decimal points visually showing despite actually being a much longer number, and then wanted to refer to that cell as part of a string like I have--- that would simply override that preference.

   Awesome to see sheets coming to Proton. Some things I noticed that were missing for me when using Google Sheets:

   1. When using the '$' symbol, I'm noticing the cells still move if dragging or copying. Generally this symbol indicates that the cells should be static.

   2. When using the "sum" feature and I add a row in the middle, the "sum" should update to include the new total number of rows.

   3. The ability to "hide" a sheet that I don't want to see all the time.

   4. Suggestion: for the "accounting" formatting, can we move the currency symbol to always be left aligned and the numbers to be right aligned? Google sheets does this with their formatting and I really prefer it when viewing money.

10. What could be improved in Proton so that more people would buy subscriptions?

    1. Proton pay - I use GrapheneOS, and I'm missing software that can replace Gpay, that I can trust with my data, and that I want to use with NFC.

    2. Proton notes - Right now, I'm using Notesnook. Obsidian seems too cluttered for me, while Notesnook looks minimalistic. I use to-do lists and tables, because it's convenient for me to have everything in one app, but maybe in the future I'll start making tables in Proton Sheets.

    3. Proton to-do-list -In Notesnook, I have tables, notes, to-do lists, all of which are missing from the Proton app. At least the to-do list and notes are there, and you can switch to tables in Proton Sheets, but I haven't seen the need for that yet.

    4. Proton forms

    5. Proton RSS Reader - I use the minimalist BazQux Reader, but I would like a confidential one from Proton.

    6. More support for Linux, because there are more people in Linux who care about security and privacy.

    I believe that these innovations will make Proton much more popular and many people may switch to Proton, while others will purchase more expensive subscriptions.

11. Improve Uservoice, please...

    This is asking for a dark mode, better UI that of proton mail in quality, a warning that twitter(x) is a VERY bad website for privacy, and fixing the system for icons, the site that proton uses for icons is according to my source of "Blacklight" by Themarckup contains multiple trackers including evading trackers, it also lets google track you. So I propose that we flock over to a different way of getting icons or at least a disclaimer to use Tor before acquiring an icon.

12. Fowarding Mails from Gmail contradicts the reason why I switched to Proton.

    I want to do everything I can to get more free storage space. However, the forwarding from Gmail to Proton means that the systems from Google know my new email addresses. I prefer to manually switch my accounts to the new email addresses.

13. Data validation in Proton Sheets

    Hello Proton Team,

    So the current behaviour of the validation is that when we press a "Delete" on a validation Cell, the validation Cell with "Dropdown (from a range)" will entirely disappear, which is quite wrong in my opinion. I (and I believe the most people) would be expected that deletion won't remove the validation that applied on that Cell.

    Not just this, I hope this validation system can have an option that allows user to decide rejecting the value or not, with the rule we set up. Unlike the current status that always allow other values that is not following the validation rule.

    BUT! Could you please mainly focus on the boring task of improving your existing products before rolling out new stuff? There are so many important features being discussed here that are just sitting and waiting since 2023...For example:

    • Mac Folder Sync
    • Separated Mailboxes
    • Improved Docs

    I understand the excitement of launching new products, but a solid foundation matters more than a wide product range. Quality over quantity, please!

15. Proton Mail down: "Internal server error"

    Proton Mail fails to load. I see an "Internal server error" error message. This started happening within the hour.

    Meanwhile, the official Proton Services Status page blindly reports "All Systems Operational." There's a disconnect between the Mail service and the status report.

17. Proposal: Two Self-Hosted Media Side Projects for the Proton Ecosystem

    Hey everyone,
    I’d like to propose two side projects that Proton could develop. Both concepts are self-hosted media streaming services that would add massive value to the Proton ecosystem without requiring Proton to build or maintain new data centers.

    1. ProtonTV: Self-Hosted Video Streaming
       ProtonTV would be a media server and client app allowing users to stream their personal video libraries (e.g., ripped DVDs, Blu-rays, or other downloaded media).
       How it works:

       • Self-Hosted: Install it on a NAS or Home Server.
       • Proton Drive Integration: Alternatively, download the app on any device, log into your Proton account, and link a Proton Drive folder containing your media. To save server costs, the client device’s resources would handle processing tasks like decoding and series identification.
       • Metadata: The app would use TMDB as the default scraper, with options to add third-party database extensions. Subscription Tiers:
       • Free Tier: Host it on your Home Server (limited to local network access by default, as most users watch series and movies at home). However, users still have the option to set up remote access manually via port forwarding or tools like Tailscale.
       • Plus Tier (e.g., Mail Plus, Drive Plus, VPN Plus): Unlocks official, seamless remote access to your Home Server through your Proton account, OR unlocks the Proton Drive linking method.
       • Bundled Tier (e.g., Proton Unlimited, Duo, Family, Visionary): Unlocks remote access + Advanced Media Features. The app scans your .mkv (and other) files for embedded dubs and subs, lets you set default language profiles, and automatically fetches missing dubs and subtitles from the internet.

    2. Protonfy: Self-Hosted Audio Streaming
       Protonfy would be the audio equivalent—a self-hosted music streaming service for your personal song library.
       How it works:

       • Self-Hosted: Like ProtonTV, it can be installed on a NAS or Home Server for local file management.
       • Proton Drive Integration: Users can also choose to stream their library directly via a linked Proton Drive folder. Subscription Tiers:
       • Free Tier: Self-host the service on your Home Server or NAS with remote access included out-of-the-box (since music is primarily enjoyed on the go, making local-only access impractical).
       • Plus Tier: Unlocks the ability to stream your library directly from Proton Drive.
       • Bundled Tier: Adds an automated feature that downloads lyrics for your library from free online databases.

    Future Vision: The "Plex Hybrid" Model

    As a long-time Proton user, I'm concerned by systemic "UserNeglect" and transparency issues. UserVoice ideas, like staying AI-free (425 votes), were [DECLINED ❌] just before Proton launched its Lumo AI tool. A Proton Admin on Reddit even contradicted Lumo's logging claims, and the official website still hasn't been corrected, showing a severe lack of follow-through. More issues like spam on the forums, unclosed completed ideas, and responses that never come make this an unignorable issue.

    My detailed UserVoice post on these issues gets minimal attention, and my Reddit post is stuck awaiting mod approval – ironically highlighting the very gatekeeping I'm exposing. I'm a loyal user, not a hater, and this needs discussion.
