Proton Chat - Messaging app
Let's make it in some math style:
ProtonMail : Gmail = ProtonChat : Hangouts
:)
Secure private chat same principle of secure email, but applied to chats.

Protonmail & VPN are great. After what I read recently on The Verge, I fear Signal Messenger can not be trusted because they are trying to convince their boss to develop ways to identify users and evict them from their platform if they do not like the way the user is using the messenger.
With that in mind, it would be great if Proton would develop an encrypted SMS free from potential "identify & censor" policies.

Hoping to resurface this feature request in light of the current spotlight issue of WhatsApp and the migration to Signal and Telegram. In investigating running my own instance of prosody, ejabberd, etc, I've deemed it too important to risk blowing. I could (and would) pay $10/month to matrix.org to host ens. I'd rather pay Proton an additional ~$5/month to integrate xmpp.

I wish to have an secure mail / messenger service with a new technology to send message from one proton account to another, without using the e-mail adress to prevent from spam.

Excellent idea. Encrypted user to user! I truly appreciate your service to keep info private. I have all my tax clients using your service to keep their info private.

Whatsapp users are migrating en masse to Signal, which I’ve been using for awhile. Yasha Levine posted a warning a few days ago that Signal was/is secretly funded by the U.S. government. This is very disturbing if true. So..... I would love for Protonmail to develop a private messaging app.

A lot of people are starting to look for something like this along with email, storage, etc. If you can put it all in one place it would help. I have a handful of friends looking for solutions and this would bring more on.

Alla luce degli ultimi avvenimenti circa la privacy di WA, sarebbe opportuno offrire analoga app su Proton.

This feels like a waste of time. There are a ton of other great encrypted chat applications out there already (Signal/Telegram/etc).

How would this differ from Signal?

Will real-time encrypting/decrypting bog down the chat and introduce too much lag or latency? It shouldn't if this is done at each end and there shouldn't be all that much text to process.
Also why hasn't anything been done? This idea was first brought up five years ago. There's a golden opportunity for ProtonMail at the moment with people leaving WhatsApp in their droves.

I've seen a couple services offering this, a "chat view" for email threads:
Basically, emails in a thread displayed as if they were messages in a chat app -this makes ongoing conversations via email with another person soooo much readable without all the metadata noise in between
Better yet, when used with other ProtonMail users, you would have a instant E2E "chat app" without installing yet another chat app!
I'd love to have this :) Pretty please? ;) Thanks!

Don't do this. Signal already exists. Maybe ask them how to more tightly integrate protonmail.

Seeing the latest news today re the Whatsapp Hack, I really think a much more secure version of WhatsApp is required. I suggest a name "ProChat"... I would be willing to pay £100 a year for your version of WhatsApp with its easy interface etc (that would be the magnet). BUT... with Security being the Highest as is your Email. Am sure you would get a large amount of subscribers hopping onboard from Whatsapp. Suggestion(s)...£75 p/yr for current proton email subscribers. Then from renewal (including new subscribers) £100 p/yr. Obviously business etc would pay more. If you already have mail/vpn/chat etc discounts would be given accordingly... I really do think you need to get in on this chat segment now. Kind regards... stay safe from RM29918

It would be great to see a nice, encrypted, in-line XMPP Instant Messaging application.

Or does Protonmail have another type of text messaging via email?
