Proton Chat - Messaging app
Let's make it in some math style:
ProtonMail : Gmail = ProtonChat : Hangouts
:)
Secure private chat same principle of secure email, but applied to chats.

My friends swear by WhatsApp which I do not support membership and therefore complete dependence on FaceBook. Can ProtonMail one day provide the same service as WhatsApp, the security and independence that ProtonMail brings?

Yes, please for crying out loud! Wire- the only end2end encrypted chat that works on all platforms and doesn't require phone/ phone number was acquired by some US data mining company and secretly changed their privacy policy.
At this point, there is no free cross-platform chat that can be reasonably trusted in regard to privacy protection. -

I would also appreciate some
kind of messenger service build by proton mail. The problem is that many of my friends use WhatsApp, so being able to communicate with them would not be possible. -

I want to talk to someone currently on Hangouts, using a secure platform but the only information I get is a female's name in Dallas, TX and go to Wal-Mart and send money.
No routing/transit number.
What should I do? -

Have you considered partnering with Wire another ethical company

I have seen on gmail that there is a chat called hangouts. I would love to have a protonmail hangouts that I am able to chat with gmail users.

I would like the same except that I would like to hangout with non-protonmail users.

We have been waiting for a messenger built-in in the mail or separately. Please do.
**Yes, there are a lot of messengers right now, but you can trust with confidence two or three. If the chat was inside the mail, That would solve the issue.
There are friends who do not use instant messengers at all. From the principle. Only protonmail is trusted. This is already a synonym for safety and reliability. -

I would like to have protonMessages app for SMS management and syncing them in cloud.
I'm afraid my SMSes are not so secure with default application.
It would be also nice to see my SMSes in browser on laptop. -

Wickr is an incredible messenger app. It uses 4096 bit encryption like proton mail allows. I use it a lot.

Dont miss the milestone. The only reason I cant get my friends from Gmail to Proton is because Hangouts is so easy and convenient. Convenience trumps security (unless your wife finds out about your other family)

In the mail program for PC or Android there should be a messenger option. In my opinion, we normally write emails to each other, but if we see someone writing back immediately, we might want to switch to a messenger/chat and write like whatsapp/telegram ....
An option: after the end of the chat (messenger mode) everything we wrote would be included or not (optionally) in the message sent to both participants of the conversation.
Of course, the messenger option is only for conversation within Protonmail users.
I think that no other email client has such option.

sorry but it will be in Polish. Protonmail has working people from Poland.
Pozdrawiam

I'm waiting for this ProtonChat (secure & encrypted) from a long time ago. It would encourage my contacts to start using ProtonMail and its services. This ProtonChat is a must-have feature, IMHO.

@C: "Signal uses Google play services to communicate"
Signal doesn't need Google Play Services at all. If you run it on a Google-free system like LineageOS (without GApps, microG), Signal simply opens a background connection to its servers, and still gets call notifications and messages in a timely manner.
From a usability point of view, Signal is perfectly fine without Google Play Services.

> Please make it interoperable with Signal Private Messenger, at launch.
That's never going to happen because Signal is a centralized service (not federated) and they do not allow third parties to use their server. Additionally it's bound to a phone number.
If anything was to be chosen it would be Matrix, as it's been audited by NCC and DINSIC. It would be great to be interoperable with librem phones, you know as e-mail is.
I think XMPP is a bit too fragmented (too many XEPs and too many clients that support a different variety).
Proton also does not have a "device" so it does make sense. I'm glad they didn't do a Tutanota when it came to encryption. Tutanota really should have tried to ratify their standard with the IETF before making a 'home made' substitute to PGP.

I wish PM had a live-chat portal that works PM user to PM user that could be set to anonymous so both message recipients are by default completely anonymous (unless they should choose to reveal their identities somehow in the chat text) and that is super basic: the ability to send encrypted, anonymous messages in a totally message data secured environment.

No, we don't need yet another chat and call network, yet another app to try and convince our friends and family to switch to.
Just use Signal.
It would be nice to use the email address itself for chat. Delta Chat already offers this over IMAP, but sadly this won't work with ProtonMail as IMAP is only available via the ProtonMail Bridge.

Is it possible to do this using emails as basis for the chats? so you would use yourname@protonmail.com and yourname@chatprotonmail.com, and all messages send/received from the latter are processed by ProtonChat.
