Proton Chat - Messaging app
Let's make it in some math style:
ProtonMail : Gmail = ProtonChat : Hangouts
:)
Secure private chat same principle of secure email, but applied to chats.

I agree with using XMPP+OMEMO, Conversations.im already works well, it would be good to have a server with ProtonMail's security.

I would love a chat feature. Only because I feel many platforms are monitoring online chat and using it to restrict conservative groups.

not sure if this has been proposed, but it would be interesting to get a slack-like tool from Proton.

Keep in mind protonxmpp is not operated by Proton Technologies AG, of protonmail fame, but by some random guy hosted in digital ocean servers

The only thing I could see them adding is something like a secure XMPP webclient since they seem to be interested in using open standards. And given that OMEMO is one of the major selling points for using XMPP for IM they could definitely do something especially if they also allow access over their onion site. But building a new app with a new scheme seems redundant given the existance of Signal & Wire.

I very much agree that enabling Protonmail XMPP services should be a top priority for all the reasons mentioned by the Op...
Any developments on this project? I tried to sign in and kept being redirected back to the the main page. :( -

Use Signal or Wire
No need for another secure messaging app -

I personally use Threema for secure IM, but I think a ProtonChat feature integrated into the web interface would make sense. It would be very handy to be able to chat with your proton contacts without having to write emails.

I use signal and love it, the only improvements I would have would be similar for messenging functionality for Protonmail:
- Cross platform support rather than having it tied to a phone number.
- Turning off emoji (damn, those things annoy me) -

Threema is the finest in Secure & Private Messaging. It does not require a phone number for identification. It uses a randomly generated ID to be given to other contacts. Wire looks good too, but does not yet have the feature set that Threema offers.
Protonmail does not need to reinvent a great product Threema has already created. Signal is also great if you are comfortable sharing your phone number.

One more option, for Android at least (and open source, available from f-droid), is Silence. I have been using it happily for months, and have convinced contacts to switch. :-D

@Happy,
Just use Signal for gawdsake! I don't trust Protonmail that much; they can't even fix up their existing bugs in a timely manner.

The reason I want protonchat, is because i trust PM enough that i desire a suite of secure proton-services. And that includes a secure chat/messaging-service.

This is not necessary. There are already great messaging apps out there, with no connections "to the likes of Google and Facebook", which are also free and excel in terms of privacy features.

I know, i know... There are others posts about the same subject. A lot of people talk about "ProtonChat", but the biggest problem here is that there are a lot of alternative already, and the issue with them is the userbase. No wonder that Whatsapp is still one of the most used services.
Now, in my proposition here, I would like to say that in my opinion "ProtonChat" should yes exist, but not as a standalone thing with proprietary protocol. It would be great to implement the well known Matrix Protocol (https://matrix.org/blog/home/) in order to enable end-to-end chat and calls (straight on the web version, and maybe implemented through the bridge).
This would allow all the ProtonMail users to communicate in other ways compared to E-Mail only, and still with other users/apps (like the famous Riot). And last but not least, it will make a lot of people aware of other services for communication, and help "make the switch" to them (in this case to the Matrix protocol).
What are your opinions?
