Log into Proton Pass directly with its own password (without having to log into a Proton account first)

I agree with Joseph (19 april 25). In my case, I would like to access Proton mail (which needs strong randomized unmemorable password), via proton pass and his separate independeant password (complex but memorable) only. It works this way on KeepassX, for example. Other Proton apps might be accessible eventualy from this point. Thanks !

I created an account here just to comment on this issue and i hate making extra accounts. I am a proton unlimited paying customer and pretty happy with proton in general. I wanted to try out Proton Pass and want to like it. But this problem with the passwords just makes it basically unusable in my use case. I have a pretty complicated password i remember that gets me into my password vault. From there i can gain access to everything such as Proton Mail. This allows me to have everythng logged out and locked down on my device. If the Pass password is the same as my proton account, it means i have to memorize my proton account password. Certainly doable but not the way i have my security organized right now.
Anyway I will remain a customer but will not start using Pass until it has a separate and completely independent password from my proton account.
Thanks for reading.

I'd like to chime in and agree with many of the people here that to me it would make sense to be able to login with the extra password after the auto-lock and not with biometrics or a pin on a device where you're already logged in with Proton, since both of those are clearly not as secure as the external password. If someone can explain me why this is not necessary/possible, that would also be great. Until then, I will have to keep a different password manager just for logging in to Proton, since I'd prefer not to use my master password for all Proton accounts. And creating a separate Proton account just for this, as seems to be suggested by several people in this thread, sounds really illogical (also because I am already paying for this 1 account).

Proton Pass is blocked by my employer, which means I will need to subscribe to another password manager and not use this feature from Proton.
Here is the exact reason from IS-Security:
Unfortunately the Proton password manager application and web service are directly tied to the same domain that Proton uses for its VPN service. Due to this, we cannot allow access to the Proton domain on our managed devices that have access to patients' data - as we do not allow access to personal VPN services. -

I'd particularly like to see this for browser extensions. Currently, there is no way to set the extra password as the authentication required after auto-lock - users are limited to no auto lock or setting a PIN. Why? I can do that with the Windows app, but not the extension? Forces me to have 3 passwords to access one service: Proton account password, extra password for Proton windows client, and PIN for Proton browser extension.
Bitwarden and Enpass aren't this convoluted.

Instead of a 6-digits Pin Code to unlock my proton pass chrome extension I would like the possibility to choose between a Pin Code or a strong password either my Proton password or a new custom Proton Pass Extension password. Similar to the Proton Pass desktop application, for which you need to provide your Proton password everytime accessing your passwords.

I'd like to see SSO between all products including the uservoice forum!
To be fair, once a passkey has authenticated you along with 2FA, it's safe to say your in and perhaps at worst, an extra biometric catch on the passkey but not a full account login anywhere. Definitely a very nice to have.... :)

Log into extension with password. Right now you can only sign in with a pin, which is not as secure as the master password.

How can Proton's engineers make such a nonsensical mistake/solution?
For now I have to pay for another password manager.. -

What is also very annoying is that Proton Pass, with the extra password, doesn't work the same way as Proton Mail in the two-password mode. The extra password in Proton Pass is not used to encrypt emails. That is the best way to confuse people.

This and the previous (improperly closed, IMO) request now has nearly 1,900 votes. A second password on top of the master is, in some ways, a little helpful but is not nearly sufficient. Please give us this. I will continue to use Bitwarden as my primary password manager until this is done.
It is obvious how much the user base needs this.

I am a Proton Unlimited user. Would like to switch to using Proton Pass from 1P. However, it seems that in order to login to Proton Pass, you have to have access to your Proton password and 2FA (if enabled), which cannot be generated until you are logged into Pass! Therefore, you would have to have your Proton password memorized and use a recovery code to get logged into Pass. Or, you would have to use another password manager for your Proton credentials and 2FA, which defeats the purpose of switching to Proton Pass. With 1P, there is a secret key and then a Master Password, so you never run into this problem. So, it seems like it would make sense to have a separate login method for Proton Pass. Or am I missing something?

I love the Proton suite, and would really like to use ProtonPass, but having to login to ProtonPass via my Proton account makes that impossible. I'm currently using 1password, and I have a randomy generated password for my Proton account.
If I want to migrate to ProtonPass I have to downgrade the password on my Proton account to a less secure one that I can remember, and that defeats the whole purpose.
We need a totally separate login for our ProtonPass login, instead of logging in via the Proton account.

This request got more than 800 votes and 100 comments. It would be nice, if the Proton team could response to it. Even a negative response is better than nothing.

Proton unlimited customer (happy user). I would really like to use Proton Pass instead of 1Password (costing me extra AUD100 per 6 months). Standing in my way is unnecessary inconvenience around login for installed apps (Windows and Android). Yes, upon installation, log in with full account user and password, but after that, only use the second password and/or biometrics.
I have a strong Proton account password, for which I use a password manager - that is, I currently need a password manager to get into my password manager, and that doesn't work for me. I'm currently choosing to continue paying for 1Password until the PP usability improves.
Request is that for installed apps, only require full account user and password for things that need to access the account across the web. Otherwise use a second stage password or biometric for local app access.

I have only ever used Bitwarden and have been looking at Proton Pass primarily as it integrates unlimited email aliases. I am quite shocked by how this password manager functions for 2 reasons:
I signed up with a proton email (free, private, anonymous), but I must login to Proton Pass with the same password as the email account associated, so if I want a strong password I have to use it for my email too rather than having 1 strong password I have to remember just for my password manager (which is the whole point).
Another thing I cannot wrap my head around is why when I want to login to the browser extension, it opens a tab in my browser to login? Why can't it be logged in, in the extension? This doesn't feel secure to me. It feels wrong.
Am i missing something? Is this actually how it works in Februrary 2025?
I have no choice but to stay with Bitwarden, I will integrate SimpleLogin for aliases. It isn't too bad really as you can buy a year of SimpleLogin, create your aliases and when you do not renew, you get to keep all the aliases and still reply from them. I just wanted to use Proton Pass as it was all integrated under 1 subscription opposed to a Bitwarden and SimpleLogin subscriptions.
This seems like child like logic, how could Proton design it like this? Surely they see a password manager as a bit different from the rest of their products?
Innocent, non tech saavy users who want to commit totally to proton are going to get rekt with this.
And btw, the sign up system to this site is just ridiculous.
