Bottom quoting went dead like 30 years ago when AOL opened to Internet. Young netiquette fanatics resisted, but that is just because they got their dogma from netiquette guides and were not present in the early days and didn't understand that bottom quoting implied editing quoted text and replying to each paragraph separately - nobody does such for decades.
What is needed now is nothing quoted unless you click a button to quote. Just like any text messenger, an email client should be able construct clear threads instead of multiplying meaningless old garbage in every single message and totally confusing new users, especially on smaller screens.
Right now ProtonMail web editor doesn't even allow to split quoted text in parts as far as I have tried, unlike gmail's one.
