Like most of the other users requesting this, the issue is about different windows, not different apps. And using the app client for mails and the browser window for calendar is far from being good UX.

There is a seemingly easy solution : currently the Proton App doesn't allow being started more than once, probably because it uses a single LOCK for the main app.

Allowing the Proton App to be started 2 times (or once per subapp) would be perfect : the app just needs to use a different locks per sub-app. For example, one for Mail and one for Calendar... Then if the app is started and the lock for Mail is taken, it checks if another lock is available, like Calendar, if it is available the app starts as Calendar and takes the lock.

Inside the app, if the user tries to switch sub-apps (Mail <-> Calendar), it's just a matter of checking if the target sub-app lock is taken or available, and act accordingly. It could even detect that it is already running in a different app instance and switch to it.

This way works on all the cases, and would only impact performance (the same app running multiple times), and adapt to whatever the user wants to use (single app, multiple apps...)

Please consider improving this part of the app !
if the app detects that it is already running once

There is so much lost time in being organized, having to switch between apps makes the vision narrow. I have at least 2 screens on my workstations and viewing messaging and calendar at the same time is the best thing you can have.
