S/MIME is (somehow) the defacto of email encryption/digital signing and gigantic players like apple mail, outlook do support it as well. Other more recent and much better solution is mailfence.com which provides both OpenPGP and S/MIME compatibility.
Protonmail needs to take that into account as well.

I don't know why it has been disappeared...
Protonmail needs to look into getting inter-operable with PGP.
Otherwise, there are couple of decent solutions out there (mailfence, scryptmail...)

This will include integrating an efficient key-store within the user account, so that (s)he can perform all the key management operations.
To this date, the only solution that does this is 'Mailfence.com' - which surely is one of the purest end-to-end encryption solution out there.
Protonmail needs to adapt this (or atleast put it on their roadmap) - as its the foremost thing that PGP enthusiast always look for in PGP centric solutions.
