Improve keyboard shortcuts (gmail like)
Gmail's keyboard shortcuts are basically an industry standard and something many have become used to. e for archive is a must, and the l and v shortcuts are crucial as well.

I couldn't agree more. I just upgraded from free proton to paid, and moved my domain name. I need to be able to process mail quickly and easily. Seconding recent specific requests: "G + [?]" too dependent on focus; easy way to get to "Inbox" reliably; easy way to archive a message and either return to inbox or move to next message (see "[" and "]" in gmail). These might seem like small things, but they should be easy to implement and could save users a great deal of time and frustration.

The G + shortcuts not working are infuriating. I would like to be able to jump from inbox to archive to trash via a shortcut. Moving focus, not moving my current email.

Also some kind of back, If I am in "all mail" looking at unread and I select an email, I want ti go back to that same page. It's a nightmare on the desktop app. A keyboard shortcut of Alt+<- would be great!

`j`, `k`, and `e` are my most used shortcuts by far, and they need to work in BOTH column AND especially row view.
My number 1 requirement for an email client is speed of processing. Gmail's shortcut system is the best (free) solution I've encountered.
I would love to switch to proton but the web client's lack of polish in this area is the single biggest barrier.

PLEASE please Puhlease fix the keyboard shortcuts. Please implement Gmail shortcuts - they are a standard.
The existing keyboard shortcuts are really whacked:
- open an email
- press escape to step out of that email
- press escape again: nothing
- g + i does nothing.
You have to click outside of the email for 'esc' or 'g'+'i' to bring you back to inbox. -

This is probably my #1 software-level obstacle to jumping more fully onboard with Proton Mail. Right now I am just so much more efficient in gmail because of the shortcuts.

Adding my feedback here as well — please improve the keyboard shortcut system.
Vim-style shortcuts (like Gmail’s) are common and extremely efficient for power users. Supporting J/K navigation alone would make a big difference by eliminating the need to move hands to the arrow keys.
Additionally, please address the issue with shortcut focus. Currently, any interaction (e.g., opening or closing an email) removes focus from the message list, requiring a click before shortcuts work again. This breaks the flow and defeats the purpose of keyboard-driven navigation.
For users who process hundreds or thousands of emails, these changes would dramatically improve usability and speed.

I would very much like this and/or allow the ability to edit shortcuts to customize them ourselves.

I don't use gmail or their shortcuts. But I would like cmd + z to undo when I delete a mail. I would like command + , (comma) to open the settings.

Please consider spending some time on the keyboard shortcuts. Its the main reason I won't be continuing my ProtonMail subscription. One just needs to look at Gmail, Fastmail for good keyboard shortcuts. Even the Outlook Web interface isn't that bad.
Even the documented shortcuts fail a lot of the time.

"General keyboard interactions need to be improved to allow processing emails solely using the keyboard such moving mails in folders... without the need to click and select options or select the next email with a mouse click."
I second this. The fact that we can't simply press enter to select the folder or label after using all keyboard to get there is very annoying. Going back to the mouse just to click on that makes it so much slower.

There are some shortcuts, but the ones they have don't work 90% of the time. Whatever element on the page they are using to capture keystrokes keeps losing focus whenever I go to the previous or next message, forcing me to click around every time until it works again.

I can't believe I can't use a very standard key, the Delete key. It's disappointing this was asked for almost 2 years ago and no update, no change.

I'm shocked they don't support this yet. PLEASE ADD THIS.

This would be huge.

Even outlook allows you to choose in settings if you want "outlook" keyboard shortcuts or "gmail" keyboard shortcuts. I'm a paid protonmail subscriber, but having these keyboard shortcuts would make me use protonmail as my default.

I should be able to use the Delete key, it is intuitive and works generally the same no matter what application I am using.

Kyle said it best:
Please improve shortcut and user functionality in the MacOS app. There are many tasks that are simply slow and cumbersome due to poor design and the number of keystrokes needed.
No need to reinvent the wheel, just use the same shortcuts as an industry standard like gmail.
