It would be nice if there was a way to set an expiration age at a folder and label level. Emails that were older than that expiration in that folder or with that label would automatically be archived or trashed (depending on preference). This would be helpful for emails I want to eventually delete, but want to keep sorted and keep for longer than the expiration of my trash. I won't have to pick between "keep forever" (archive) or "delete in 30 days" (trash). This would also mean I wouldn't have to manage my email as actively because I would be assured I would have an extended time window to reference certain emails, but I would also be assured they would eventually get cleaned up.

For example, I have a "Receipts" folder with an expiration of two years. As time progresses, any email that was received more than 2 years ago would automatically be trashed from that folder. That way I wouldn't have to actively manage my receipts, because I know they would eventually get deleted but I would also have 2 years to reference them if needed.

There is a way to do this with Sieve, but it means I have to use Sieve (too complicated), it would only apply to emails passed through that filter, and would require configuring all filters pointing at a folder/label.

I would like to control auto deletion of emails after x days by folders and/or labels.

This is essential for news letters you want that might live a few days in your inbox but don't need to live any longer than that!

Same for promo and offer emails that you do want that will expire!

I agree with this. I don't need to save a jobhunters "available work matching your qualifications" email from indeed from a year ago. I don't consider it spam but I don't consider it worth taking up space either.

For ecologic reasons, it seems critical to me tha users get used to delete not relevant informations instead of just archive.
All appointment related email shall be applied an expiration date for example, through a selected date when reading the email, or via labels as some people have proposed before. But it would exclude the ones who use protonmail freely and are the ones who need the most to tidy the inbox.
I thought about a selectbox with 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, custom date proposal. And maybe enlarge filters to help select date related mails.
Filter mails by "has an attachment" may help to clean-up too

This is possible in gmail and in outlook. by folder or by sender or other condition. It is extremely helpful, I'm surprised it hasn't been implemented yet?

I think this is a very important feature. I already use it for personal folders on my corporate account. On Proton I would like to use in my 'LinkedIn' folder, in order to auto-delete them after one month or something like that.

Especially in trash and spam, it would be nice if there were options for say 60 or 90 days or even a custom number.

Right now, Proton auto-deletes emails in Trash and Spam after 30 days by default. I’d love to see an option to customize this time.

For example:

1) Privacy-focused users could set it to auto-delete after 1 day, a few hours, or even immediately (skip Trash).

2) Others might prefer to keep deleted emails for 60 or 90 days, just in case they need to recover something.

Having this flexibility would give users more control over their privacy and email management.

Well, it's been almost 10 years and we have yet to see this basic (but really important) feature implemented 😕

While it's technically possible to do right now using Sieve filters feature [ https://proton.me/support/sieve-advanced-custom-filters#managing-expiration ], not everyone is willing/able to learn the Sieve programming language just for this. So it should be added in the user-friendly manner to the "Add filter" UI or in the Folder settings

Auto deletion by folder is very important to me.

I have many years experience with messaging...let me not date myself...cc mail...lol But seriously, we need a way to set expiration aka deletion of emails on custom folders.

I would love specific e-mails to be automatically deleted after x days based on a specific folder, filter or label.

I would like Proton to provide system tags/labels that dictate retention such as 30 days, 60 days, 90 days, 180 days, 365 days. These tags could then be used in rules to assign the tag to all incoming emails. Proton would delete any emails older than the stated tag.

If I haven't looked at an email 180 days, chances are I never will, just delete it.

I would love the ability to delete mail in a folder after x days. This is the main reason I have not switched fully to protonmail.

For newsletters this feature has been around for many years on my old @live.nl account from MS. have been looking for it ever since.

This would be a helpful feature. But from a UX perspective, I would make it configurable on a per address basis.

I would suggest this flow:

1. Allow users to set the max. lifetime of messages in the Trash folder (from 0, disable trash functionality completely to 30 days)
2. Allow users to set the max. lifetime of email messages, i.e. the "auto delete" functionality
3. Show a new tab "Expiring Soon" on the left side, just like for scheduled messages, when the functionality is activated.
4. Move email messages to Trash.

This allows fine-grained control over both expiring messages and a "grace period" for messages that have been moved into Trash.
