Filter out / exclude trashed emails from searches
I don't personally have a compelling reason to delete my emails permanently due to the amount of free space on my account, and due to the negatives outweighing the positives as far as I'm concerned. For example, that email I accidentally deleted a couple months ago without realizing, can now be recovered from the trash.
However, when using the search feature, all trashed emails are included in the results which can add a lot of noise. Therefore, I'd love an option to be able to exclude trashed emails from the results.
In terms of usability, it may be nice for it to be a toggle, so it persists across sessions (and also gets applies to non-advanced searches too). If not a persistent toggle, then a checkbox option when performing an advanced search (though in my case, the former suggestion would be highly preferred as I'll rarely ever want to search through my trash).
Thanks ProtonMail!

Yes, please add this and use Gmail as reference. I'm a paying user and I need this feature

It's been three years since the original comment; it's very frustrating that this hasn't been addressed yet because it's a very significant pain point from my perspective. Please, Proton staff, consider addressing this.

When I am looking for a message, I do not want in my results the ones that are already trashed. Therefore they should be filtered.
One exception should be if I am in the Trash folder, that mean I am looking for a message I have supposedly trashed before. In this case only the trashed ones should be shown in the list. -

Search should not search the trash

Yes, always having Trash included is a buisance. Another, more flexible alternative would be checkboxes to include/exclude each of the locations offered as search locations in the advanced search box.

I have needed to find a coupon in line at the store several times, but with all the emails that I get from places that are worthless and therefore deleted, the search pulls up hundreds of emails in the trash and there is no way to filter them out. which means, I have to spend lots of time searching through things I have already deemed useless to find the one I am interested in.

Gmail has a really nice way of doing this were the interface notifies of hits in trashed messages and offers a link to display them. Hope to see something similar in Protonmail soon.

This would make it MUCH easier to find a specific email that you're sure you wouldn't have trashed. Of course if you made a mistake & trashed it you could always search just the trash.
