Independant Push Notification (GSF Independet)
After switching to Lineageos without a Google Playstore, I am unable to receive push notifications from protonmail, because it relies on the google service framework.
If you could keep an independent push notification functionality, like telegram foss or wechat, it's much appreciated.

Would like to see support for https://ntfy.sh or self-hosted NTFY instances.

Governments (including US) use push notifications for surveillance and they issue gag orders to companies when doing so.
https://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2024/03/surveillance-through-push-notifications.htmlI don't need absolutely instant push notifications from my email, but I do need to be notified *eventually* that I have new mail. Just give me an option to do a wake-poll-sleep on a timer in the app where I can choose the frequency. I would probably set it to 15 or 30 minutes personally, but it wouldn't be unreasonable to set it to hours.
What I want to avoid is me constantly opening my mail app all day long just to check for new messages.

As I was reading Protons old fundraiser news posts about funding and supporting GrapheneOS and going against big tech, I am suprised we still don't have this feature.
I'm a GrapheneOS user myself and I receive push notifications from a Signal and Tuta without Google Play, so I don't think this would be too hard to implement.
Hopefully this is or will be on a todo list :-)

As a visionary paid plan customer for several years, I'm disappointed to witness some easily-fixable persistant red flags...
Most people looking for privacy or basic ethics despises Google for good reasons. It's a simple fact.
Why keep relying on Google Play to allow notifications on the most important app of the Proton ecosystem ?
It's even harder to understand when privacy-respecting alternatives already exist.
I know you can do better and I'm sure you could bring a lot more trust with little fixes like this one.
A loving customer that want to continue its privacy journey with you ;)

Still waiting for this feature. At this point, I think they have forgotten about it.

I agree with all the other comments this is such a critical feature

Many people here blame Proton for not implementing independent push notifications. But honestly, I just scratch my head when looking at the top feature requests with thousands of votes which at best fall under the category "nice to have". This one so crucial has just 80+ votes as of Nov 24 after several years of polling...
Tyranny of the majority...
Nevertheless, as a privacy focused company this should have been on their agenda even without any feature request. -

They want to be the go-to privacy app, but depend on Google push notifications? When I entered a feature request, their support staff was the most unhelpful and dismissive person I have ever talked to.

I completely agree with the need for independent push notifications in Proton Products. Relying on Google Services Framework (GSF) hinders user privacy and limits functionality for those who prefer not to use Google apps.
I prefer having a background job that would check for new emails now an then than having continuous notification delivery tunneled through google servers.

It's ridiculous how long people have been requesting this. Battery life should no longer be an issue now that UnifiedPush exists (and distributor apps like Ntfy.sh work perfectly).

I have, and will only ever have, a deGoogled phone (I use LineageOS) without Google Play Services.
I need a sound notification for incoming mail that is private just like Protonmail emails.

It's crazy that this is still not fixed in the official app, specially as there is a workaround that requires a third party app (I don't need to say how bad it is, do not install the workaround please)
I want to see background synchronization being an option on all versions of the app. Should be fairly easy to warn the user about battery consumption (which is negligible honestly, no more than Play services). But unified Push must be implemented as well. It is very easy to implement and doesn't even have the battery consumption downside.
I'm so excited just thinking about Unified Push for ProtonMail.

"Privacy by default" it says on the top of the page, mockingly, as I am required to run Google Playservices on GrapheneOS to actually recieve my emails.

I would totally need this, because I use Android without Google Services and therefore without the ability to receive Google Push Notifications.
A setting for regularly polling for new mails or getting updates via a websocket connection would be great.
But the ability to trigger a webhook would also do the job for me. -

UnifiedPush exists and is being used by other apps. There's no reason to stay with Google anymore. I want to degoogle!

Do the developers not read the suggestions on this site?

Bruh. We use ProtonMail the NUMBER ONE reason being avoding google. And they do these kinds of shenanigans.
You know what, they don't have a public friendly issue tracker, they don't accept pull requests, they don't publish their services on f-droid. And now this.
I've recently listened to Techlore podcast, & it seemed like Andy's no different than any other corporate sc@mmers.
Believe me, PM looks like a FOSS service with GPLv3 but it technically isn't, because it doesn't follow OSF standards.
