Independant Push Notification (GSF Independet)
After switching to Lineageos without a Google Playstore, I am unable to receive push notifications from protonmail, because it relies on the google service framework.
If you could keep an independent push notification functionality, like telegram foss or wechat, it's much appreciated.

I really like Protonmail, but this is very important. Proton's demographic is much more likely than the average Android user to be avoiding Google. If you guys implemented this, I would instantly upgrade my account to paid.
The fact that this has been talked about for years with no visible progress is concerning. Lots of other open-source apps have GSF-independent notifications; it shouldn't be too hard to take a look at what they're doing if you need some ideas.

I would very much appreciate this functionality as well. Coming from a Huawei phone and more recently a LineageOS device, the lack of push notification support without google services is an annoying issue. Many other push notifications for messaging apps do function without GSF and implementing a similar design with ProtonMail is essential for independent operation. This is especially true for privacy-conscious users who prefer devices without google services installed.

I'm really interested to this improvement. As others users, my phone don't have Google services using a clean Android Vanilla,
I'm also interested to switch my main mail address and subscrive a "Plus" account with Vpn also but a good notification service is very important.
Please advise me when this feature could be ready, I'm at your complete disposition as beta tester.
Thank you in advance and best regards from Italy!

I agree that this would be an excellent feature. There are a growing number of people who are opting for phones without the Google framework installed, and I believe a large number of these people are likely to be ProtonMail users.
As it stands, the ProtonMail Google app works perfectly without the Google framework installed, with the exception of notifications. This is no fault of ProtonMail, and is due to the fact that all notifications on an Android-based phone are handled by GSF, making it much simpler for app developers. It is however possible to use alternate methods to provide notifications.
Another app utilising notifications without a dependence on GSF is Signal.

It would be nice ProtonMail Android app is fully independant of Google Play Services.
Push notifications for the ProtonMail Android app requires Google Play Services to be installed on the devices. Since custom ROMs like Lineage OS generally don't have Google Services included, push notifications won't work with such OS-es. -

I second this!!. just switched to Graphene OS, your VPN is GSF independent. It would be great if the Email client was as well.

I am running on a Huawei P40 Pro and I'm not receiving push notifications for my emails, including my paid ProtonMail account is very unfortunate. I have no issues receiving notifications from other messaging apps, such as Facebook Messenger, Snapchat etc.
As stated above, there is a growing number of devices that do not use Google Play Services.

I just discovered that Tutanota has notifications working without Google services needed, and PM needs to do the same. I really don't want to switch email for such a simple feature as having working notifications. For now, I have to leave my home computer on all the time to receive emails in a desktop client that then forwards all my emails to Tutanota so that I get notifications on my phone! But PM is my main email, only using Tuta for this purpose. Could happily turn off my computer and delete Tuta if this was fixed.

I just switched to GrapheneOS on Android, a super secure Google-free OS. I love it but am surprised that there are no options to get notified of my emails in Protonmail. Push notifications don't work without Google? Supposed to be privacy focussed but to get your emails, you have to have Google(the least privacy respecting entity on Earth)? Doesn't make sense. Telegram and Signal and other apps have working notifications on this OS, so PM should be able to also. One option in PM is to connect a backup email to send notifications to, but once a day is the only option. I want a notification to the backup email after each email. I read that admins of PM had answered some requests back in 2014 and 2015 that they would add that feature soon. It's now 2020! Please help your truly privacy minded customers with better options!
