Create subfolders within folders

How do I escalate this. I really want subfolders and collapsing folder trees. No in my opinion labels/tags are not a suitable alternative.

I can't believe that Protonmail doesn't have the ability to create subfolders besides folders. This alone reduces the usability of Protonmail (when compared to Gmail, for example). I hope that progress in this respect is made as soon as possible.

I completely agree. As many other users. I was about to take a "visionary" subscription, since Protonmail really does an excellent job.
Now I am shocked to realize that folders are not nested.
Come on!! I would be interested in moving a current 6 Giga Inbox with some 20K+ mails to Proton and use it as main mail provider. But without nested folders this is a very clear no go.

Apparently, ProtonMail will be adding subfolders to v4.0.
In the meantime, if you use ProtonMail with a desktop client via the Bridge, you can create subfolders by naming folders within the web interface as follows: "[Parent folder] /[Subfolder] /[Subfolder]". The parent folder will not be readable, so all messages need to be within a subfolder, but otherwise it works fairly well.
I know for sure that this works with Apple Mail, and it may also work with Thunderbird and Outlook. In the web interface and app, however, this will not work.

I would love to have subfolders. I think it would be sensuously beneficial to have. I like the idea of the labels but it does not work for the amount of email I deal with. And perhaps the ability to expand the main folder and have the subfolders drop down.

This lack of feature impedes my transition to Protonmail as only email provider.

I organise my mail with folders and use the filter to do so. But because they are not subfolders of the inbox this actually makes it more confusing, I constantly find myself searching mails in the "All Mail" tab.. which kind of makes the whole sorting useless.

Yes, we need subfolders.
Labeling alone is not enough for clear organization

Yes I see you've implemented labels as a new way of organizing mails but actually in the panel in your web app and in the mobile client the list of folders and labels gets very confusing.
Solution would be to add subfolders so folders can be ordered, and structured. By being able to collaps the "tree" (so you only are able to see the superfolder) the list would become much more clear. An alternative would be to create the possibility of hiding some folders and labels in the right pannel and therefore again the list would become more clear (but subfolders would be better to organize than hiding folders and labels).

This should probably be merged, as it is a duplicate of https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/284483-feedback/suggestions/32773126-nested-folders

I've only got a couple of thousand emails - but this occupies 20 pages in a folder.
Another free email provider allows 3 levels of folder, sub-folder and sub-sub-folder (which is more than I need).
They don't encrypt and the signon page has adverts - but its probably worth using for anything non-personal & low importance stuff - but they have sub-folders! -

absolutely agree, sub-folders are a must, no way around it

If you will still be resisting to add nested-folders feature I will quit using ProtonMail service at all. It is unbelievable that in these days such e-mail service like ProtonMail does not support nested-folders. Is it really that hard to add this functionality? Come on Guys, do it immediately otherwise you will be losing your clients. I am not going to pay for something that does not meet the basic requirements of users.

Today how protonmail uses folders and labels is just a mess.
What we need is sub everything, you can have labels but everything needed to be organized and the organizer is the end-user.
So we want organize our over xx,000 messages with labels or folders and thats why we need sub-folder support.
i think that the problem is somewhere how protonmail crypting the users inboxes.
Ok make a workaround then, labels dosnt need changes to the crypting mecanism so, make labes work just inside user selected folders, there they can work like a sub-folders, even tho the messages are staying static on the main folders.
That's way we dont see anymore that ugly and long list of folders, sure it is great if protonmail can tweak the folderlisting a way that every folder can show their sub-labels on them, that is easier for user to navigate in the protonmail ui. :)
Reason why i want sub-labels, is that we can keep that folder and label list small and nice.

Add this, and I am a premium user in a heartbeat. Especially with all the news lately of Google allowing third parties to read emails, everyone is searching for alternative options and naturally come across ProtonMail... only to get turned off when they realize there are no subfolders.
Please add subfolders - more than one sub-level.
Why the resistance, folks? Shouldn't be a tough add, and your response asking people to change how they work with emails is disappointing to say the least. Please make your product an excellent product by adding this.
