Bridge Desktop App
I know that Protonmail can't integrate with existing desktop mail apps, such as Apple Mail our Outlook, because of the extra passwords. However, I'm not a fan of having to access Protonmail through my browser. Is it possible to build a desktop app with similar functionality to Apple Mail our Outlook (minus the extras, such as calendar integration etc... although that would be nice too)? If you guys build an iphone app, for example, then I don't see it as a huge step to move on to a Mac OS app after that.
With the ProtonMail Bridge, it is possible to use ProtonMail with any Desktop client while still maintaining end-to-end encryption. https://protonmail.com/blog/thunderbird-outlook-encrypted-email/

Errh guys, relax a little! I upvoted the suggestion and agree that a desktop client to Linux-Mac-Windows would be absolutely awesome, but keep in mind that they are a small team and they are delivering rock solid on a LOT of different areas. Go read their blog! And don't forget, you get it all for free with no ads or privacy intrusions whatsoever! If you want to see something happening at a faster rate then donate to the project, buy a plus or visionary account, etc. so they can hire more people. Or even better, if you are a skilled developer that can provide a prototype or workable code (the project is open source) then go for it!
If you can't support in any way that's fine and you can still make valuable suggestions, but there is no need to be a prick crying that they don't take us seriously and such bullshit! Show some respect to the guys and gals that actually *DO* care about you! -

I've used Fluid.app before, but found that nativefier is a better option. It can create a standalone app on Windows/Linux/macOS. You can specify the default/minimum/maximum windows size, etc.
On macOS it even supports system notifications and shows a dock icon when you've got unread email messages. Under the hood it uses Chromium when building the app. If you use macOS, it installs very easy with Homebrew: brew install nativefier.
I built my macOS app with the following command (Mail.icns is a custom email icon I downloaded): nativefier -n ProtonMail -i Mail.icns --min-width 1150 --min-height 700 --disable-dev-tools "https://mail.protonmail.com"
That being said though, ProtonMail is working on a bridge component to integrate with existing mail clients. The announcement asking for beta testers was sent out end of December (29/12):
"The ProtonMail Bridge is among the most requested features by the community and lets you send and receive encrypted emails from within your mail client of choice. The Bridge supports any client that uses IMAP/SMTP including Outlook, Thunderbird, and AppleMail."
So, ProtonMail are in fact actively working on this.

I appears that Protonmail aren't taking their customers "seriously" as they claim. It's now one and a half years after the original thread with a vote count of 1024 and a reply from "The Team" that we might see something but not until 2016 at the earliest.
There have been from what I can see, no updates to this thread beyond new comments from other users.
I would love to use Protonmail as my primary email but am reluctant as A) I can't have my browser open 24/7 and B) the Android app just does not work leaving me without any notifications.
The built in notification popup is nice, but again, I'm not always by my computer forcing me to check Protonmail via mobile browser to look for new messages.
I haven't had to do that since 1998.

Windows app would be great, and I'm sure Mac users want an OS X version as well. I would also love to see other features like contacts and calendar built into the app so I can share appointments with my wife and kids on our own domain, etc.

so, this still going to be a thing, or did you all give up on it?

So it's 2017 now.... Considering the interest of nearly 1000 votes it would make sense - as a company who takes their customers seriously - to post an update about the current status don't you agree?
I will for sure wait with migrating the rest of my email accounts untill a desktop application is available. -

Yes please, I need this feature to switch to proton mail (paid plan). I don't like to use my web client to read my mails.

I would love to see this on Linux! I'd also keep in mind that many of your customers are likely more intelligent computer users and privacy-conscious, so it is more likely that they will be using Linux. To satisfy all sides, maybe a cross-platform desktop app should be shot for. Slack can do it, so why not you?

This has been "planned" since Aug. 30, 2015. Any update on when this might be available?

Protonmail works fine on my phone, but is tedious on a desktop. I am negative about actually using it unless a pc app is developed

Either a Desktop app or SMTP/POP integration would be really helpful. Having your browser open all the time is senseless.

I agree that a client desktop app is sorely needed. I much prefer an email client over web based email.
