Sub-folders are essential to email management. My typical use case is incoming email is automatically sorted into top-level folders. After review/reading, they are moved to an appropriate sub-folder or permanently deleted. Thus top-level folders are "always clean" and sub-folders are always full of useful or important content.
--
Edit to add: I think my use case can be accommodated by creating a "top-level" folder in which the messages carry labels indicative of their sub-category. Not ideal by any stretch, but this is a possible work-around. Now, how to import existing emails? -

Can we PLEASE get an update on this?
This is required for any sort of comprehensive organising of mails and should be prioritised.

Just started w Proton - all was looking golden until I cannot see how to add subfolders - and now I find this thread - UGH
Proton - the first of this thread was from 2017 and it is now 2021
PLEASE - are you going to get this handled or do I request a full refund (I was ready to go to Visionary half hr ago)
But I CANNOT possibly migrate with sub folder capabilityI also don't like that Labels all list at the bottom of the folders.
No point working hard to set this up until I hear - please Proton - is this important to you or not??

The ability to embed folders, so you can put folders inside of folders. For example, have a main folder (Pharma Industry) and then be able to have folders inside of that folder for different Pharma Companies

the maintainers of this forum, if they exist, should really be making notes on ideas like this that have been implemented in beta (also people who voted on this should get their votes back since we only have ~10 votes at a time)

I like the way Gmail does the folders, which is what I believe we're talking about here. I definitely am a FOLDER user and a deciding factor in my decision to subscribe (to get the folders) instead of free. So in Gmail you can (like everyone is saying put folders inside of folders and the only way you see those folders is when you open the primary folder. Like I have a correspondence folder and I and folders inside that folder to keep all my correspondences to refer back to later. But I don't see all those correspondences till I open that primary folder called Correspondence. I'd like to see that feature in Protonmail also. I'm trying to move my folders over from Gmail now and this is one of the problems I see, good point EG.

I have the beta version 4.0 and in that version it is possible to make subfolders. Question to protonmail: when will this beta version be "the" custom protonmail version?

Ughhh! Just upgraded to a paid version. First thing I did was create a few new folders to organize my email and decide how I would structure them.... no joy! With only 3 folders available in the free version I didn't think to even test if they could be nested. Now I have a two year subscription to an email service that doesn't support the most basic, fundamental organizational feature!
Going to limp back to my GMX account... that unsecured, ad laden, average interface product that.... lets me nest my folders
Please ProtonMail Team, advise us that this feature will be included and update us as to when it will be included. (Last response from The ProtonMail Team on this topic was that this was "Planned". That response was from March, 2020.

FYI - When using the import tool, if importing from a sub-folder, select "create new folder" and it will create the sub-folder as Main/Sub as the name, but it isnt supported in a "tree" like every other mail service in the world does. Amazing that the most fundamental folder/file path structure know to personal computing isnt incorporated

Sub-folders are indeed critical to any top-tier email system. Please add them soon.
And please fix this voting system -- it did not record my vote, and others have said the same. This raises questions about either actual skill with computer systems or basic personal integrity. The voting system looks like it must be run by Dominion Voting Systems or the Democratic National Committee!
