macOS CLI for Proton VPN (connect / disconnect / status)
Please bring the Proton VPN command-line interface to macOS.
Proton VPN is now the only Proton product without a terminal interface on Mac: Proton Pass CLI and Proton Drive CLI both ship on macOS, and the original protonvpn-cli supported macOS until it was retired in 2020. The new official CLI is Linux-only.
Without a CLI, the macOS app can't be controlled by anything else. There is no way to connect or disconnect from scripts, automations, or launchers like Raycast and Alfred. Workarounds are unreliable or unsafe: starting the "ProtonVPN" system VPN service without the app cuts the internet connection, and third-party CLIs require handing over your Proton password.
What a macOS CLI should offer:
- protonvpn connect (fastest server), with --country, --city, --server and --profile options
- protonvpn disconnect
- protonvpn status --json (state, server, country, IP), with clear exit codes
- It should work alongside the GUI app and control it, so the kill switch, NetShield and other settings stay in sync
- No sudo required, since the app's system extension already manages the tunnel
Tested with Proton VPN for macOS 6.5.2.
