MacOS client
Proton Drive really needs the ability to sync desktop files automatically. This post focuses on a Mac OS client for Proton Drive.
Thanks for your feedback and patience, Proton Drive for MacOS is now available!

Hello friend,
I've been using Proton services for almost a year now with little to no complaints and I'm sitting here in disbelief that there still isn't a way to integrate Proton Drive to connect and backup Mac folders easily.
I wish to exclusively use Proton for my startup, and here are some ideas I had throughout last year.
Before I begin, I want to add that I HATE Google Drive and Gmail with all its oddly vanilla but at the same time awkward features (Gdrive is a complete mess when working with large groups of people and files, it also lacks privacy. And Gmail constantly ruins my life and makes me seem amateurish with its random text changes and autoformats which have no turn-off button).
Now, here are some issues Proton currently has:
- As far as I understand, the files, when trying to upload in bulk, are failing due to different folder names and file formats which proton drive oddly doesn't support. These types of issues are mostly on Mac at the moment.
- There needs to be a Proton app that is downloadable that kind of functions as a much better Mega app. This needs to be working on Windows, Mac & Iphone/Android etc. as well as connected seamlessly through one account regardless of platform.
- Proton Drive needs to easily connect different folders through different computers, this is especially necessary for digital-based businesses. This could be a challenge, but if it worked I don't see why it couldn't charge extra for storage space and seamless integration for large businesses that need the backup space.
Proton has it almost figured out, and I wish I could transfer everything to it completely for the tech needs of our startup.
I believe that the mail and calendar are good enough as they are, but the drive still needs some more work. I just want it to be a secure place where I can upload everything easily. And please make it so that we can name the folders whatever we want.
If Proton could stand for true Privacy + Customization + Digital Freedom, it would be the best in the world.

I've been expecting a Mac OS client for Proton Drive for a while. I need it to move all my documents from hotmail and google for good

I don't have a problem with the interface or needing to go through the web to use it, so long as I can store and share the files I need. But the real problem for me is bandwidth! I can't use Proton Drive to share media files (audio recordings) now because the upload speeds are so slow, I can't seem to get better than 2 or 3Mbps total, even if I do simultaneous uploads. I've tried it with Proton VPN on or off and followed all sorts of fixes and advice, but the speed won't improve. With Google drive I get close to the full bandwidth of my connection (uploads at up to 70 Mbps or so) but not with Proton.
That to me is the one reason I can't use it the way I'd like. If that changes I could stop using Google drive! I don't need the same level of sync as others do with workgroups etc so personally I'm fine not having sync folders or a native app, I don't care how I access it but I need faster transfers. I haven't even tried giving my clients a link to Proton Drive because if the uploads are that slow they're only going to get slow downloads too, I can't do that to them -

I don't consider Drive to be anything more than a one-off until we have a way to sync with the desktop on Mac. Currently using Sync.com for this until Proton has it.

Brave Browser Apps already does this for me. I'm not entirely sure how but after the last update it started turning my Proton stuff on my Mac into app like popups I could pin to my dock. It had already been doing this to some things on my android phone when I went to 'add to homescreen' sometimes it would have an 'install Proton' app like option instead, that behaved like an app but wasn't an app.
The main difference between this 'app like' option on my mac vs the actual app on my phone is that it's part of the Brave Browser so if I open it up when I restart my mac all my Brave Browser pages will wake up as well. So it takes it a bit longer for everything to wake up again during the initial opening process if Brave wasn't already awake, also if you had a few browser pages open previously you suddenly have lots of things flying open instead of just the Drive, Calendar or Emails opening. Which wasn't so ideal if you are temporarily switching on your phone data to do one or two things before switching it off again, but otherwise once everything is open and you have internet it works great.

I feel the same way.
For example: the search function still doesn't exist in Proton Drive via Safari on MacOS whereas it is there with Firefox and Chrome. It's hard to understand why this hasn't been fixed yet. -

Totally agree with Damian’s comments…
Proton has so much potential - and it’s clear we all want to support that vision of privacy - but it’s held back by a lot of silly things, mainly the integration into Mac!
Proton pass is not supported on Safari (mac’s browser)
There’s NO dedicated proton mail app on Mac
Proton Drive has zero Mac integration - (the core idea of a drive is it should be useable like one.)
Calendar integration is lacking.
Overall I purchased the ultimate tier and I’m happy to pay for development of that privacy goal, but in the meantime I find myself unable to use any of these services to their fullest;
Instead of protonpass I stick to 1Password (which works in safari and has vault sharing)
Instead of protondrive I stick to pcloud (which has full integration into the file system)
ProtonMail is usable on iPhone but can’t we just get a dedicated Mac app?
ProtonVPN is solid on Mac, but the rest are missing OBVIOUS usability features or functionality (like standalone programs).
Don’t take it as negative feedback, but rather as CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM… we all want the Proton ecosystem to be amazing but in your push you are leaving behind very simple basic functionality which hampers wider adoption!

Proton Drive is essentially useless without the ability to sync to/from the OS filesystem. SMBs (especially technical and creative types who are personas most likely to consider proton) are more likely to use Mac than large enterprises - proton's services are more likely to be purchased by individuals and SMBs than large enterprises. Porting the functionality to Mac is not as big a job as building the functionality for the first time (which you've already done for windows) - hire a developer with knowledge of Mac OS FS for 3 months and it will be done. Get a grip on reality, as these silly product decisions continue to frustrate the hell out of people... I have my personal accounts on a proton visionary plan but I've been trying to move my business from Google to Proton for (literally) several years now, and I just cannot do it because of these types of issues (calendar was another frustration).
Does anyone from Proton actually bother to read this "User Voice" feedback? -

This is so critical for the service to be legitimate. Also it NEEDS a mac version of the app.

I would be nice to use Proton Drive as Network-Storage (CIFS, SMB, WebDav, S3, FTP) using Proton Drive Desktop as local server (with the ability to connect from LAN-Devices)

In order for any application to become successful, it must integrate with the OS for customer experience. The current manual upload via https is not user friendly and the Windows App (I installed Parallels Desktop to overcome the shortfall of the Mac OS client) won't run on ARM processors, leaving us Mac users out in the cold.

This would be great. Sync has this capability with windows and it makes for a workflow that feels efficient and not sluggish. Wish someone would make this work for linux.

bingo. without the desktop app (with streaming option instead of keeping a copy on the computer) the team process will be stalled. must-have solution.
